Clark Scarboro Obituary

La Conner - Among Clark Scarboro's many passions were the ocean and boats. He built his first sailboat at 14. He sailed round trip to Hawaii in his early 20s. His love of boats led to his career in the pleasure boat industry. Over time he became a highly respected boat designer and engineer, working most recently for Bayliner Marine.

Clark and his wife Joan just celebrated their 60th anniversary. Their daughter Zoe Fisher, husband Steve and children Brandt and Elle live in Edmonds. The Scarboros have lived in Shelter Bay for 25 years. Clark was Commodore of the Yacht Club in 2004. He was a long standing member of the Building and Harbor Committees.

Clark was an accomplished musician. In his youth he played the flute and piccolo. In later life he learned to play the oboe, which he enjoyed playing in local community bands. Recently Clark took up the ukelele, learning to play and transcribe music on the computer. Clark was not a singer but he encouraged Joan to join him at ukelele jams and sing her heart out while he and others played.

The Scarboros traveled frequently. Mexico was a favorite destination but Europe, Turkey, Croatia, and Thailand number in their many adventures. Invitations to cruise on friends' yachts took them to the Sea of Cortez and the Mediterranean. They sailed their 48 foot boat throughout Puget Sound and Canadian waters, and circumnavigated Vancouver Island.

Clark enjoyed older boats; they were always a project to be brought back to life. He did the same thing with cars, installing a new engine in his 1967 Sunbeam Alpine, and he built or remodeled 6 of their homes.

A man of many talents, Clark also painted watercolors. No surprise, most of his paintings were of Boats!

Memorials in Clark's name may be made to the Education Fund of the United States Power Squadron.+

I've met gentlemen in the past, but not to the level Clark exhibited. It was a privilege to have shaken this man's hand and witness his genuine smile. Thank you, Clark, for all you've done for us.

I loved having Clark and his wife in Friday ukukele jams at the Anacortes Senior Center - bright spots of inspiration! This Hawaiian-born girl wishes I´d known more about his Hawaiian adventures and had visited with him about them! RIP Clark.
