JAMES SLOSTAD Obituary

James Thor Slostad, age 69, a former resident of Mount Vernon passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 in Seattle. Jim was born on March 12, 1940, the son of Thor and Nina Slostad. Jim was raised in Mount Vernon. After school he served in the United States Air Force. After his honorable discharge he worked at Boeing. He then worked for Star Machinery in Seattle, where he worked for most of his career, renting and selling heavy equipment. Working as a salesman gave him the enjoyment of meeting new people and also meeting their needs.

His true passion was working on his Austin Healey, restoring a speeder and helping friends. Jim led a full life with a wrench in one hand and a list of projects in his mind, never having enough time to complete them all. He will truly be missed by all that knew him.

Jim is survived by his wife, Arlene Slostad; sons Jeffery and Steve and daughter-in-law, Rasa Slostad; granddaughter, Stevie Lynn; brother, John Slostad; sister, Maryann Lawrence and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorials in memory of Jim may be given to Skagit Habitat for Humanity P.O. Box 2565 Mt.Vernon, WA 98273.

There will be a final goodbye in Mount Vernon where he will rest beside his parents at the Mount Vernon Cemetery. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, April 23, 1:00pm at Mount Vernon Cemetery.

Local services are under the care of Kern Funeral Home. You may offer your condolences to Jim's family online by signing his guest register book at www.kernfuneralhome.com

I always enjoyed Jim when he came into my office or if I ran into him at a Seahawks game. He always put a smile on my face as well as all the others in my office. I personally feel like I have lost a friend. If the world were full of James Slostads, it would be a much better place. Over the last few days, my prayers have been with his family. At night before I put my children to bed and we pray, we always ask God for a special covering over the Slostad family. We have lost a great man, but Heaven has gained one. We will miss you Jim. God bless....the Graham family.

Our deepest and most sincerest sympathy to Arlene, Family and Friends of Jim. We will greatly miss his visits and consistant thoughtfulness. Dorothy was always deeply touched by his visits over the years and was considered as part of the family. It's been a pleasure to know both Jim and Arlene.

I feel like I knew Jim forever, yet only a few very memorable years. I will miss Jim and his way of always getting it done. He was a "Peddler" to the end.

Jim was a good friend and Healey mentor who treated me like one of the family. He was larger than life and will be deeply missed. My heart goes out to Arlene and all of his family.

Healey tours without Jim won't be the same. We'll have to bring our own parts, and eat his share of the cookies! He left a big hole in our lives. Hugs to Arlene.

I think the class of 1958 are all saddened and shocked to hear of the passing of Jim.
He was a joy to know and always upbeat.I saw him last June and he was always the same Jim, happy to see you and sorry for any ills in my family.
He especially wanted me to be at our 50th class reunion and I was unable to because of my Dale being ill.
To the family of Jim my deepest sympathy and Jim will be missed.

I was saddened to hear of Jims passing. Jim and I were in the Class of 58. We shared a love for old cars and I always enjoyed hearing his detailed stories about the cars he was working on, especially his love for his 40 Ford. I don't know of anyone that loved that era of car as much as he did. He did also love the "Healys" as he referred to them. Although we didn't communicate much I felt we still had a connection, especially when we saw each other at our 50 class reunion last August. Please accept my sincerest sympathy. Jim will be greatly missed.
