John Allen Hancken

1929 - 2021

Anacortes, WA - John A. Hancken, 91, passed away peacefully at home after a lengthy illness on August 19, 2021. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama on October 11, 1929 to parents Sanford H. Hancken and Ella May (Jones) Hancken.

John was a graduate of West End High School and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army from 1954 - 1956 and was stationed in Germany with the 5th MASH unit. After completing his tour of duty he returned to the University of Alabama to complete post graduate studies in the field of periodontics and received his degree in 1958.

Dr. Hancken had a long and successful career as a periodontist owning and operating clinics in both Alabama and Mississippi. He was the first periodontist to practice in the state of Mississippi.

He enjoyed many pastimes - but his passion for University of Alabama football eclipsed all others. Having played college football for Western Kentucky University in both the fullback and linebacker positions enhanced his appreciation for the game. He was equally at home outdoors and spent many enjoyable weekends game fishing from his base camp in Louisiana. His love for nature suited him well for settling into life in the Pacific Northwest.

Generous, warm, welcoming, wise, storyteller. All are words used to describe this special man. Proud of his southern roots, he never forgot where he came from. Making the move to Washington State was a momentous decision which he embraced wholeheartedly.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Shar C. Hancken; daughter Helen Ogle (Wayne), Nikiski, Alaska; nieces Peggy Sizemore, Childersburg, Alabama, Patricia Mathews, Birmingham, Alabama; and a host of extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters Dorothy Hancken and Elizabeth Waller; brother James Hancken; daughter Holly Stanford and granddaughter Anna Loving.
