RICK SCHMITT Obituary

Rick Schmitt, 53, passed away in his home on April 1, 2010 after a three year battle with colon cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends.

Rick was born to Clarence and Darlene Schmitt on July 28, 1956. His family moved to the Stanwood area from Seattle when he was 5 years old.

He married his high school sweetheart, Doreen Nielson, on April 14, 1980 and they were blessed with 3 wonderful children. Rick graduated from Stanwood High School in 1974.

Rick recently retired from Wolfkill Feed & Fertilizer after working there for 30 years as a manager. He had pleasure working with all of the local farmers.

Rick was an avid Stanwood High School booster. You could always find him in the stands, wearing his Spartan attire at local sporting events. Rick was active with the local FFA and Junior Livestock auction each year as well as raising beef cattle as a hobby.

For relaxation, one of Rick's favorite places to escape to was our Desert Aire house in Eastern Washington.

In his younger years, Rick was very active in local men's softball, bowling, and basketball leagues. He was a coach for his kids youth teams and if that wasn't enough sports for the day, you could always find him relaxing in his chair watching ESPN when he got home from work.

Rick is survived by his loving wife Doreen, and three children, Amy of Seattle, Angie of Arlington, and Jacob (Megan) of Stanwood. He is also survived by his father Clarence of Stanwood, sister Denise Nemo of Arlington, sister Vickie Coward (Tom) of Stanwood, brother Jeff Schmitt (Dawn) of Stanwood, sister-in-law Debby Nielson of Everett and brother-in-law Darren Nielson of Everett, and his in-laws Bob & Myrna Nielson of Stanwood. Rick left numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother Darlene.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday April 7, 2010, at Camano Chapel.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 9-5 at Gilbertson Funeral Home in Stanwood.

Donations can be made to Skagit Hospice thanking them for an amazing week of care, or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
