Dunlap A. "Dunny" Sims

Dunlap Sims Obituary

Aug. 12, 1921 - Aug. 6, 2011
NILES - Dunlap "Dunny" A. Sims, 89, of Bell Road in Niles, passed away at West Woods of Niles on Saturday, August 6, 2011, with his longtime friends, Lu Ellen Brown and Judy Moses, by his side. Dunny was born on August 12, 1921, to the late Benjamin and Ellen (Hartgrove) Sims in Ballinger, Texas. After graduating from high school, Dunny received his Bachelor's in Education from Texas Christian University and went on to receive his Master's in Education from Columbia University. On June 27, 1954, Dunny wed Madge Rohn at a ceremony in Ludington, Michigan. Together they had one son, Zeke. Madge passed away in 2006. Dunny worked at WSBT-TV and Radio for many years. He hosted the Triangle D Round-Up radio program where he was always known for signing off, "This is Zeke Sims Daddy, Dunny." Dunny was always active in the community, he did announcing for the Brandywine football games, worked for Channel 34, hosted his radio program, and all the while looking after Zeke and Madge. After retiring from WSBT he continued to do football announcing. Dunny was a naturalist to the core; he loved his large property and all of the joys that it brought him and Zeke. Dunny was preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Madge. He is survived by his son, Zeke Sims of Niles; longtime friend, surrogate daughter and confidant, Lu Ellen of Niles; and siblings, Ben (Sue) Sims of Paint Rock, Texas, Bill (Sue) Sims of San Angelo, Texas, and Cora Kaye (Fred) Campbell of Paint Rock, Texas. In keeping with Dunny's wishes, a private family service will be held. Memorial donations may be made in Dunny's name to the Niles Association for Exceptional Citizens, located at 201 Sylvester Street, Berrien Springs, MI 49103. I remember Dunny. I remember playing with Zeke. Dunny made all kinds of interesting things for Zeke to do. I remember he had an underground tunnel that was real fun, but I got stuck in it once. RIP

Please accept my sympathy in Dunny's passing. I worked at WSBT when Dunny was fighting to get Country Music on the air. We were happy when he succeeded! I was secretary to the manager, Neal Welch at the time. Dunny was so good on his show and we were all proud of him. Zeke was a little guy then. We had good times with Madge and Dunny. They were such nice people. That was many years ago, but, I never forgot them. When I read his sign off today in the paper, I could hear him saying it at the end of each show. good-bye Zeke's Daddy Dunny. We'll always remember you.
