GRANGER - Francis Carl Shafer, 89, of Granger, formerly of South Bend, passed away July 25, 2010. Born October 4, 1920, he was the son of the late Vernon Joseph and Louise Clara (Schiffli) Shafer. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Fred Shafer. After serving in the Army during World War II as an engineer, Francis married Joan M. Vanderbosch on November 22, 1945. She preceded him in death in 2002. Francis is survived by two daughters, Linda (Doc Andrews) Shafer of Granger and Sandi Plummer of New Palestine, IN; two brothers, Joseph of South Bend and Jack Shafer of Granger; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Shafer was a tool designer and later an engineer draftsman. He retired from Bendix in 1985. His favorite thing in life was tennis (playing and watching), being an avid tennis player until age 85, winning many city and state tournaments. After retirement he was asked and then coaxed by his daughter to take a coaching job with Saint Joseph High School which he thoroughly enjoyed for the next 15 years. He also enjoyed bowling, and was a member of the Bowlers Hall of Fame. Francis retired as a football usher, holding a Gold Card, at the University of Notre Dame. He was also a member of St. Anthony's Parish where he was part of the Ushers Club. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 AM on Friday in St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, with Mass beginning at 11 AM. Mr. Shafer was a wonderful man who coached our son on the SJHS tennis team. He gave many years of service to the team and was a great inspiration. He was able to participate in the sport he loved until a very late age. He was appreciated for his kind and giving spirit and his enthusiasm for life. He will be missed - certainly not forgotten. Linda and Sandi
I was saddened to learn of your father's death. My goodness, I realized that I had known him my entire life. I will always picture your dad in his tennis whites on the courts of Leeper Park or those of Holliday Park in Ft. Lauderdale. What an excellent and competitive tennis player he was. When I picked up the game of tennis as an adult, I so appreciated your dad taking the time to hit with me and share his insight/tips. I will certainly miss his teasing and dry sense of humor. My thoughts and prayers are with the two of you and your families at this most sad time.
