He was one of my favorites. I still use a line he used to say in shop class about when someone wants to modify an engine or piece of equipment.
He would say, "The good lord made it that way for a reason"
I enjoyed being in his classes.

Though I never had the privilege of meeting Jerry in person, after reading the testimonies of the incredible impact he made in the lives of so many, I feel in a way that I have met him. What a wonderful man he must of been! You have been richly blessed.

I pray that God will comfort you and your family as only He can and help you to put your trust in Him.

Jerry was not only a neighbor but a good friend as well. We are proud to say we knew him. We are saddened by the loss but the world was a better place because of him. Scot's tribute gave a wonderful picture of the kind of man Jerry was. May he Rest in Peace.

Wish I had known Jerry Shaw better. He sounds like an amazing man, and the tribute paid to him by his son was powerful, gut-wrenching. Scot Shaw showed us the man his father was in such a passionate way. We all dream of having what this father and son had: Real-life heroes, life-long friendship and eternal, unconditional love. Jerry must have been a special man. It's pretty obvious that all his good traits have been passed on to his son, Scot. His family is blessed to have him, too.

Carol, knowing you from ABF Ladies Auxiliary, I pause for a moment at your and Jerry's bee beard photos on the Feb calendar. I wish you and your family great peace as you celebrate the life and passing of Jerry. As a fellow Hoosier by birth, it is heartwarming to read the loving entries of Jerry's former students and sense the quality of person he was. I miss him without knowing him. May we live our lives in a Godly manner as he did.

Although our lives take us many different places at many different times in our lives it is seldom that we ever forget those that made major impacts on our lives especially in our youth. I am greatly saddened by Jerrys passing. My families prayers are with your family as you grieve. I had Coach for driver training at Northfield. He was a very special man. I loved his many and varied stories of teaching people to drive. Getting stuck in someones front yard in Indy in the mud, and people that screamed and covered there face when it looked like disaster to a new driver.
What a genuine and caring young teacher at the time. I still tell some of the stories he used to tell. He was as you know one of a kind. I loved to watch play basketball. He was a superb player and could leap out of the gym. I am sure he will be sorely missed.
I thank God that he allowed Coach to be a mentor in my life. The man always had a twinkle in his eye.
Sincerely
Gary Kusiak

I was a young fan of Jerry shaw when he played for Charlie Steidle's LaFontaine Cossacks, a high school team that went 18-4 losing in the final game of the sectional tournament to Wabash. He went off to Ball State and returned to us as our coach. I was proud to play second base for him and learned driver's training from him. He was a superb athlete and a teriffic coach who believed sports should be fun as well as competitive. Many great memories of him as a student and later a teacher in our town.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Shaw. He coached me three years and had a tremendous positive impact on how I lived my life. My condolences to Mrs. Shaw, Beth and Scot, and the entire Shaw family. Take care and God Bless!

February 5, 2011

My heart goes out to the entire Shaw family as they mourn the loss of a faithful role model and a wonderful father. He never wavered from his own beliefs, and he treated people consistently with kndness. His amazing legacy lives in on the lives of his children, who reflect the good person he was. Jerry made a difference. He will never be forgotten. Clearly, he will be missed.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mr. Shaw's passing. He taught me how to drive in Driver's Education. I think of him when I drive down Lincoln Way and Main Street in Mishawaka. He said, "take the middle of the road, so that people don't try to make it two lanes." I follow his advice to this day.

My husband remembers him also from shop class. He was a wonderful teacher.

Carol and Family,
As we age and remember the people who influenced our lives there are the "Very Special People" and Jerry was one of those in our live's. Being from a small town like LaFontaine with our small LHS was a privilege. I remember Jerry was the "Shop Class" teacher which he loved teaching more about life that shop I think. Then there was basketball, track and cross country and Jerry was not only our coach but an example in competition, especially in the "High Jump" and "High Hurtles High" he loved to compete and show us how to have correct form by demonstrating how he was a great athlete. He would say you need to develop those legs so mow you parents lawn and anyone else's that will let and use a hand push rotary blade lawnmower it gives a better cut. Winning the “Old’e Oaken Bucket and the Basketball Country Tournament and advancing to the Sectional what a big deal he made it and he made all of us feel very special. What a wonderful list of memories from where you lived on Kendal Street to Driver's Ed when Jerry would say well we're going to see the "Dam Grass Today" meaning we were going to the “Mississinewa Dam in our 1963 red/white Plymouth Fury, oh what fun we had in those days. I hope you know I was honored to have been influenced by your Husband, Father and Grandfather and privileged to call him “friend. What a great loss to you and all of us who loved Jerry and have so many fond memories of him. I trust he is with Jesus who died that we might all have Eternal Life in Heaven with Him: Ephesians 2:8-10 and I Corinthians 15:54-58. Thanks for sharing Jerry with us so many. Jerry also taught my wife Carol Driver's Education at Northfield.
Sincerely,
Dale & Carol
