Kermit Eby Obituary

1931 - 2010
MISHAWAKA - Kermit, of Mishawaka, was born Aug. 6, 1931, in Elkhart, Ind., while his father was pursuing his teaching and academic career. Kermit attended Wakarusa High School, and then graduated from South Shore High School in Chicago in 1949. He attended Manchester College, interrupted by military service in Germany from 1951-1953. This is where he met Ruth Fessele, in Esslingen. They married on Feb. 18, 1954, and returned to Manchester College. Kermit began his teaching career in social studies in Hammond, Indiana, followed by two years of graduate studies at the University of Chicago. He graduated Phi Betta Kappa and took a principal position at Lakewood Elementary School in Park Forest, Illinois. Kermit's career brought him to administrative position in Harvey as an Assistant Superintendent and to DeKalb, Illinois, as the principal of Clinton Rosette Middle School. He pursued his PhD at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (ABD). Returning to South Bend, Indiana, in 1978, he completed his career in the South Bend Public Schools in Special Education in 1994. He continued as a substitute teacher until 2007. Kermit was a civil rights activist in the 1960s, participating in the civil rights movement and equal housing demonstrations of the 1960s with Chicago's leading activists. He pursued educational reform long before it was popular, and was certainly ground-breaking in his vision of a more just and democratic curriculum. Kermit raised his children to be conscientious of their personal responsibility in creating through their work, peace, equality and social justice. Kermit is survived by his wife, Ruth Fessele Eby; his daughters, Bettina (Richard) Cool, Carmel, Lisa (Franc) Ortega, Mission Viejo, Cal.; and his son, Kermit (Stephanie) Eby III, Naperville, Ill.; grandchildren, Marisa and Dominic Ortega, Alyssa and Garrett Cool, and Lauren, Simone, Kaiya, and Ezra Eby; brother, Daniel Eby, Toronto, Canada; and brother-in-law, Bill Baird, Placerville, Cal. Preceding him in death is a sister, Sylvia Baird. Our family is committed to the values of Christian ethics, social justice, and participatory democracy because of Kermit .We believe that we will eventually overcome in the struggle for a new Kingdom. And our faith will be shared by all who welcome this love. Kermit was an "ornery" liberal, unafraid to speak truth to power. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, in the Crest Manor Church of the Brethren, 1342 Berkshire Drive, South Bend, Indiana. Pastors David Bibbee and Bradley Bohrer will officiate. There will be a time to meet and celebrate Kermit's life during a luncheon following the service. Memorials may be directed to Manchester College, 604 E. College Ave., North Manchester, IN 46962. Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, Goshen, Indiana is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to www.rrefh.com.

I can not had the pleasure of being with Kermit and Ruth one week in my life. Kermit and Ruth served with me at Camp LaVern, a Church of the Brethren camp in in California, to a group of girls and boys in early teen years. If the Ebeys had not been with me that week I honestly do not know what I would have done. They both were just outstanding in their leadership and counsel. The great wisdom and spiritual depth they gave us has been sweet comfort through many years. We know and trust Kermit to the arms of the one who wipes the tears away. He Truly was " an ornery old cus" filled with the love and hope of Jesus. I don´t think I have every none any one who loved kids more than Kermit an Ruth.
May the Great Comforter bring all peace. Much love, David McKellip

Kermit was my greatest inspiration in college and throughout my career as a special education teacher. He was an acitve support in my life long after graduation, and kept in touch through phone calls, e-mails, and amazing Christmas letters highlighting the year's events. My thoughts are with Ruth and the family he spoke of with such pride. I feel blessed that our paths crossed and I was able to share in the stories of a man with such an amazing and influential life. Thank you Kermit!

Ruth, My condolences are with you and the rest of the family. I just talked to Kemit a few months ago, and we were suppose to go for coffee as soon as both of our worlds slowed down to permit it. Kermit was my teacher at John Adams High school. I was going through a very rough time in my home life, and Kermit was very hard on me. But as time went by and I grew older, I realized he was only doing it for my own good. I respected him very much, and thank him for helping mold me into the person that I have become. I really wish we would have got a chance to get that cup of coffee. I had so many good things to say to him on how his discipline on me had made me this great person. I owe alot of it to him. I guess I will just have to wait a while on that cup of coffee. He will be missed terribly.

Dear Ruth and family,
I knew Kermit in high school, at South Shore High and always was inspired by his sense of humor and vigorously optimistic approach to life. I remember him as a true son of his distinguished father too.
Please except my deepest condolences on his passing; the world needs more like him - honest and strong.
Be well,
Mike

My deepest sympathy goes out to you Ruth and your family. Kermit will be missed but never forgotten.

October 21, 2010

I am so sorry for your loss and that I am unable to be there on Saturday to give each of you a hug.

I will certainly miss Kermit. He was ornery and knew me well enough to know when to voice his opinion and comments into a conversation, and then then your mom would say "Now Kermit that is enough."

And when I would go over to visit Ruth and she would fix me coffee, Kermit would always inquire what she was fixing and "Ruth could you fix me some too."

He was a brillant man and I am proud to be considered one of his friends that he e-mailed regularly....even on the day he died I received 2 emails from him that were politically related.

I will miss him.

Ruth I will be back next week and we will visit then.

I love you both and am keeping you in my prayers
