Ronald Como Obituary

Ronald “Ron” Perry Como

Jan. 15, 1940 - Jan. 2, 2019

GRANGER, IN - Ronald “Ron” Perry Como of Granger, IN, born on January 15, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Roselle Bellino Como and Perino Ronald “Perry” Como went to meet his maker at the age of 78 on January 2, 2019. He “Went Home” surrounded by his family after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Ron attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated with his undergraduate degree in 1961, and earned his Master's in Business Administration in 1963.

Ron served his country in the JROTC while attending Xavier High School in NY. During his time at Notre Dame, Ron was awarded a Purple Heart while serving active duty with the Marines in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Ron worked most of his career in the Aerospace and Automotive industries for Bendix/Allied Signal. Ron was easily identified as the guy who drove the old VW Beetle to work with the boat tied on top, even in the winter! In 1992, after more than 25 years of dedicated service, Ron retired as the Director of Labor Relations for Allied Signal in South Bend.

Ron leaves behind his wife of over 57 years, Melanie L. Como. Together they were blessed with six children: sons, Ronald Como Jr. (LeAnn) and Paul Como; and daughters, Melanie Como-Dits (David), Wendy Como, Paige Como-Howard (Jon), and Mary Como. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren: Ronald Como, Christopher Como, Abigail Como, Alexis Bishop, Amelia Bishop, Gabriella Bishop, and Tyler Dits; and great-grandson, Bastian Richardson.

Ron was foremost a Husband, Father, and Grandfather but also had a passion for the outdoors. Ron was an avid hunter, fisherman and photographer. Ron and his son, Ron Jr., spent countless days out on their property enjoying the wildlife and looking for that “perfect buck!” During the summer, Ron loved sitting peacefully on the deck of his home on Birch Lake surrounded by his wife Melanie and their children and grandchildren. The beauty and magic of the water and sunsets always brought a smile to his face and never got old!

Ron was a long-time member and supporter of the Izaak Walton League of South Bend, IN and the Edwardsburg Conservation Club of Edwardsburg, MI.

The family would like to extend our thanks to the caregivers who tirelessly spent hours taking care of “Mr. C” for the past 10 years. We are truly grateful for all your kindnesses. We could not have done this without you. God Bless all of you. Special thanks also go to the wonderful doctors, especially Dr. Paula Toth-Russell, Dr. Brian Jacobs, and the doctors at the Cleveland Clinic.

Friends and family are welcome to attend the visitation at McGann Hay Funerals / Cremations / Gatherings, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR 23, Granger, on Monday, Jan. 7 from 4-7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Matthew, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend, on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 11:00am, Father Terry Fisher, Rector, officiating. Entombment and committal services will follow in the St. Joseph Valley Memorial Mausoleum Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask donations be made in Ron's memory to The Parkinson's Foundation (www.Parkinsons.org); South Bend Isaac Walton League; or Edwardsburg Conservation Club. To send your private condolences to the family log on to: www.McGannHay.com.

The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 4pm Monday in the funerel home.

You made your parents so proud of you with your accomplishments and family during your life's journey. Being the son of a celebrity is not easy and I know you handled it quite well. Together with your mother and father, you are at peace and may God bless you and your family. Rest in Peace.

Dear Melanie and family, I had the pleasure of meeting your family so very long ago when your children were young and your family were our patients at the office of Dr. James A. Douglas, D.D.S. I hold some fond memories of you, Ron and the children in my heart. Such a beautiful family and so full of life. I recall how sad we were to learn you were leaving our area.
Through the years, upon your return to the area, I would catch little bits and pieces of the Christmas shows and I kept thinking of "all that love and talent in one family." Ron was a "Man of Class." May Ron rest in peace, and may our Lord comfort you at this very sad time.

Warm Regards,

Dear Como family,
So sorry to hear of your loss of husband, father and grandfather. While the years distanced us, the memory of Ron at Studebakers in the 60's remain dear. We had lots of hard work, laughs and went thru the JFK turmoil. Ron was always a happy co-worker, a little in pain once when he had cut his foot on broken glass, and someone to make the workday more pleasant. Melanie, you taught me about "frozen" onions at a party at your house. Congrats on your many years of marriage. Bob and I had 47 years before he passed from heart failure in 2003. My sincere sympathy to you and your family and while you may not remember me, your family is in my thoughts with fond memories of those years past.

So sorry for your loss. Ron bought several cars from us many years ago. He was a nice man and always easy to deal with. I knew several people he worked with and everyone always said good things. His wife and daughters were amazing talents and we went to see them many times. PIP my friend.
