Scott Mackie Obituary

July 2, 1976 - Sept. 22, 2013
BUCHANAN - Scott Alex Mackie, 37, passed away peacefully at Franciscan St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City, Indiana, in the early hours of Sunday, September 22nd, 2013, with his parents by his side. Two days early from being a bicentennial baby, Scott bounded into the world on July 2nd, 1976, at McHenry Hospital in McHenry, IL, to John and Janet Mackie. The fifth of six children, Scott excelled in school and earned his varsity letters as a quarterback in football and a point guard in basketball at Crystal Lake Central High School in Crystal Lake, IL. Graduating near the top of his class in 1994, he went on to earn both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Kansas. In 2001, he accepted a job as an engineer for Boeing in St. Louis, Missouri, working on classified projects until he left the company in 2012. Scott was in the process of earning a PhD from Washington University in St. Louis when he passed. Aside from his mathematically gifted mind, Scott had a strong passion for the arts, specifically music and writing. He filled countless binders with his poetry, some of which he gave to friends for use in their music. But perhaps the greatest joy brought to him in this lifetime was his four children. Scott is survived by his children, John, Katie, Joey and Susie; his parents, John and Janet; his three sisters, Pamela (Danny) Malott, Sherri (Brian) Martinie and Stephanie (Paulie) Santos; his two brothers, Jerry (Jules) and Mark (Abby); and many nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, September 27th, at Swem Funeral Home, 301 W. Front St, Buchanan, Michigan. There will be a viewing two hours prior to the funeral, beginning at 11:00 am, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will follow at Faith United Methodist Church, 728 N. Detroit St., Buchanan, MI. In lieu of flowers, a fund has been created for the benefit of Scott's four children. Donations may be made payable to Scott Mackie and mailed to 5th3rd Bank, 2753 S. 11th St., Niles, MI 49120. To sign his guestbook or leave a condolence message, please visit www.swemchapel.com.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Scott. I offer my deepest condolences to the entire Mackie family. I was a friend and co-worker of Scott's at the Boeing Company from nearly his first day on the job. Scott was an excellent computational fluid dynamicist and propulsion engineer. When we worked together, Scott was always professional, gracious, and a joy to be around. During times that we were not working together, I never hesitated to stop by his desk to discuss KU basketball or Chicago area sports teams. I am confident that some the propulsion technologies Scott helped pioneer will be evident in future Boeing military aircraft. He will be greatly missed by many here at the Boeing Company.

My family and I had the honor and pleasure of living 2 doors down from Scott and his beautiful family! He was always kind and so good with his kids (and ours) we had many fun summer nights, all of us on our block, (kids and adults) with a literal arsenal of water artillery!! He was a great neighbor and friend and an awesome Dad! He will be sadly missed by all the "Louisvillans" on this block! May You, his family, be comforted with a lifetime of cherished memories to carry you through until you meet again! Always in our prayers, the Naunheims.

To the entire Mackie Family,
My most heartfelt and deepest condolences. I can't remember a time when I did not know Scott or admire him from a distance. Whether it was doing fingertip push-ups in basketball camp, listening to his jokes in the locker room or admiring his wit and intellect in the classroom, my life and that of all the members of my similarly large family were enriched by Scott's influence and example. He will forever be in our thoughts and our hearts.
