William Gruner Obituary

William "Bill" Edward Gruner, 70, died unexpectedly April 19, 2018, in Brooksville, Fla. Formerly of Rockland, Mass., Mr. Gruner was a Homosassa, Fla., resident. He enjoyed fishing Florida's West Coast waters in his 15-foot skiff. He had moved two years ago from Wildwood, Fla., where he enjoyed fishing the fresh water. He belonged to the Tri-County Fly Fishing club. Mr. Gruner worked for three winters as a volunteer in the Everglades National Park at Everglades City. There he greeted park visitors, taught fly fishing to children, made various repairs and helped maintain boat engines. He often accompanied park rangers by boat around the 10,000 Islands portion of the park. He worked in many other capacities at the park and returned there to vacation in his motor home. Retired, Mr. Gruner, lived most of his life in Massachusetts, where he had managed Crout's Bicycle Store in Quincy for many years. He had also worked as a hydraulics and car mechanic. He enjoyed boating and maintained his own boat's motors. Mr. Gruner is survived by his brother, Robert of Damascus MD, and sister-in-law, Lyn, and nephews, Derek and Robert. Also, by his son, Michael of Scituate, Mass.; daughter, Stacey Miller of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; stepsons, Charles "Chip" Leonard of Rockland, Mass., and Eric Rayleonard of Palmer, Mass.; and eight grandchildren, Ava, Ryan, Jacob, Paige, Brooke, Chase, Domenick and Donovan. He also leaves behind his significant other, Shirley Leonard of Homosassa, Fla.; and former wife, Kerry Ryder of Whitman, Mass. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at Channing Church, 45 Webster Street, Rockland, Mass.

I first met Billy in Quincy around 1965. He was the very first person (I believe) to have a 10 speed racing bike. I was 14 and he was 19. I was on my sting ray bicycle that every kid had. NOBODY had a 10 speed racing bike except Billy Gruner. He explained all the features of his bike and let me take it for a spin. He told me he participated in road races and occasionally I would see Billy riding his bike going a zillion miles an hour! from that moment on I saved every cent I could earn mowing lawns and shoveling snow to save up for a racing bike. When I was 16 I bought a Schwinn Super Sport from Billy at Crout's Bike Shop. This model was the very top of the line and Billy had it. I had to have it too! It cost $96.00! A TON of money back then. For a while I was the only kid in Quincy that had one of these bikes (as far as I knew)...and I never saw another kid on a the Super Sport model. Over the years I would drop in to Crout's bike shop to have my wheels tuned and Billy was always there, busy fixing bikes and managing the store. He "lived" for racing bikes and I loved talking to him about them. Then one day years ago Crout's bike store closed and I never saw Billy Gruner again. I am 65 now and still tell this story about how I met Billy and bought my first racing bike from him. Over the years I have never stopped riding a bike. Today I have the latest model super sport that Schwinn made before they went out of business. When I bought it I told the store owner the same story how I came about to be the first kid in Quincy to have a racing bike after meeting a guy named Billy Gruner. I can still see his face after all these years......always smiling and always friendly. In reading his obit I not surprised he worked outside and enjoyed talking to people. I bet nobody every had a mean word to say about him. Rest in peace Billy.
