Dean Morrissey Obituary

Dean Walter Morrissey of Marshfield, formerly of Scituate passed away on March 4, 2021. He was the husband of Shan (Crete) Morrissey, with whom he shared 33 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife and his daughter. He was the devoted and loving father of Ani C. Morrissey and the late Kate C. Morrissey. He passed his creative genes to his beloved daughter Ani. Born in Quincy on October 1, 1951, he was the son of Mary (Luce) Zimbone of Quincy, and the late Dennis Morrissey. A graduate of North Quincy High School, he went on to become a lineman. Dean was a self taught master painter, and began to write his own stories. His award-winning book "Ship of Dreams" was one of his proudest accomplishments. Dean was also an accomplished guitarist, and was known for his sense of humor and his Irish ability to spin a tale. Dean was a friend of Bill Wilson since the 1980's, and left this world grateful for each day. Loving brother of Bryan Morrissey of Hingham, Janet Morrissey of Scituate and the late Gary Morrissey. Brother in law of Joanne, Christine, Terri and Neil, Doug and Jodie, Dan and Kellie. Adoring Uncle of 15 nieces and nephews, 5 great nieces and nephews and his many dear cousins. As family and friends are unable to join together to mourn and celebrate their beautiful husband, father, brother and friend, there will be a Celebration of Life in the summer. Donations in his memory can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, www.cff.org, Father Bills https://helpfbms.org/, and the Come as You Are Coalition www.cayacoalition.org Richardson-Gaffey 781-361-3906

I so enjoyed our conversations and was looking forward to getting together to play a little guitar in my studio, but our Lord needed you to paint a heavenly portrait.

I am so sorry that we were not aware of Dean's passing last March. What a wonderfully talented artist he was. Craig and I will always remember our visit to your home in Scituate and our dinner together. The best part of the evening was when we got to go into Dean's art studio with him, where he created his masterpieces. Whenever he would come to Gallery One in Ohio we would try to come see him. We went out to eat together a couple times and I always felt like I was in the company of a celebrity. But he was really a friend and we are blessed to have known him . He was even in on a surprise visit from my family on my birthday one November at Santa's Hideaway Hollow in Ohio. One of his paintings of Santa is always on our mantle at Christmas and we are fortunate to have a number of his originals in our home. My deepest condolences to Shan and Ani and the entire Morrissey family. Our hearts are saddened to have read this news today ! Rest in Peace dear friend .

I am so sad to hear that Dean is no longer with us. Howard and I loved his work from the very first time we saw it at conventions in the late 80s - his wonderful imagination and wizards, his joyful Sandman and whimsical red rocket wagon paintings. His ballon ships and billowing clouds and toys and trains and always beautifully rendered characters, in the finest of classical style. I remember us buying our first piece from him at a Boskone 1989 and then finding his "Sandman" paintings when "Ship of Dreams' was still a project in the making, Lunacon 1991. We saw them and had to have them even before the art show opened, so that he had to display them "NFS". I went on to represent Dean in sales of his originals right after I started up Worlds of Wonder, and supported him 100% in getting his first art print done and even cheered when he went on to Gallery A and fine art prints from Greenwich. Dean deserved all the possible recognition he could get, the more exposure, the more fans, the more collectors of his work, the more books he would write and illustrate - the better! There was and is no one better in expressing the wonder of childhood.

I only just heard. I am so sorry. I've been entranced with his work since I stared in awe at the covers of The Dragon Magazine 40 years ago or more now. Ship of Dreams has been a gift for so many children in our lives. Thank you, Dean, and my condolences to his friends and family.

I was so saddened to hear that Dean has passed. He was a friend, a wonderful artist, a humble and sweet man. In recent years he has made so many nice comments on the art that I post on Facebook. Some people hate Facebook, but I appreciate being able to stay connected with friends I rarely see. I met Dean many years ago at a Boskone Fantasy convention, before his first children's book, and I encouraged him in that direction. I have many of his wonderful books, they are a treasure. My sincere condolences to the family. --Ruth Sanderson

Our lives first intersected at "History Meets the Arts" (Gettysburg, PA) and a rare and genuine friendship blossomed from that first meeting. The über-gifted (and magnanimous) artist and a former Canadian Mountie - and a rare friendship. Remembering a gentle giant with talent overflowing. Cherished memories of his modesty and self-deprecating humour which still evokes the very largest of smiles. Deeply saddened to hear of Dean's passing. His artwork adorns our dining room. Honoured to have counted him amongst my Friends. My thoughts and prayers are with Shan and Ani. Peace of Christ, my Friend.
