Donald Hansen Obituary

Donald William Hansen, Esq., Age 69, of Quincy and formerly of Norwell passed away on February 1, 2020 after a five-and-a-half-month battle with brain cancer. Don was the loving husband of Lindy Hansen of Quincy and the beloved father of Kirsten and Britt Hansen, as well as the proud grandfather of Jack William OConnell. Born in Hanover, Don was the son of Sophy (Church) Hansen and the late Harry C. Hansen. Donald was a 1968 graduate of Hanover High School where he was class president, and a 1972 Graduate of Rutgers University. He went on to earn a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Northeastern 1976 and a J.D. from Suffolk University in 1983. He lived in Boston, South Weymouth, and Quincy before settling in Norwell for over thirty years and moving to West Quincy early last year. Don worked for the City of Quincy as both Personnel Director and Assistant City Solicitor before opening his own law practice where he enjoyed developing relationships with clients for over thirty years. In addition to his private practice, Don worked as counsel at New England Medical Center. In his spare time, Don traveled widely with his family including visiting Scandinavia to track his ancestors roots and France to follow the footsteps of his great uncle during World War I. An avid tennis and basketball player in High School, Don continued to share his love for both sports with his daughters and their peers as a coach. Ever curious, he was always reading and discussing politics with his family. He loved to bake and was especially fond of fruit pies which he loved to make after an annual blueberry or apple picking outing with his wife and daughters. After a diagnosis of Parkinsons disease in 2006, Don faced his health challenges with strength, grace, and resilience and partnered with Boston University to contribute to movement studies for Parkinsons to help other patients learn to cope with their diagnoses and improve their symptoms. Over the past year and a half, Don enjoyed getting to know his new grandson, Jack. Don had an eloquence and a quick wit that continued to bring tears of laughter to his family, even in his final days. Don will be missed deeply for his positivity, kindness, sense of humor, and loving nature. He loved summer and the ocean, recently saying, I try to do something different on the first day of every summer. His family hopes to carry that love for life in honor of Dons memory. Don is survived by his wife, Lindy (Arnold) Hansen of Quincy, his daughter Kirsten Hansen and her husband Gary Godinho of Boston, his daughter Britt Hansen and her husband Patrick OConnell of Boston, his grandson Jack William OConnell of Boston, his mother, Sophy Hansen of Hingham, his twin sister Deborah Hansen- Hollenberg (predeceased by her late husband Dr. Norm Hollenberg) of Brookline, his brother Peter Hansen and his wife Sharon of Hanson, his brother John Hansen and his wife Janis of Eastham, his nephews Christian Hansen of Kingston, Dana Hansen of Plymouth, his niece Julie DiCicco of Holliston and his sister-in-law Elaine Guinta and her husband Nick of The Villages, FL and niece Elizabeth Boeheim of Missoula, MT as well as many cousins, extended family, and friends. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, February 6th from 4-7 p.m. at the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington Street, Rte 53, Hanover. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 7th at 11 a.m. at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 17 Church St, Hanover. Crushed and dismayed by such terrible news of Don's passing.
Like Joan Inglis Smart, I was in Hanover's class of '69. We all admired Don and sister Debbie, as they set such an example of class, joy, and leadership. I'll remember them both forever. Prayers with the entire family in their loss of this wonderful guy.

Donald is a friend. We, Donald and Deborah, went through school (first thru twelfth) together. Donald was inquisitive, smart, and just a great guy. He was a very good Basketball player and Captain of the Tennis team. He was the class President for Hanover High School class of 1968. Donald wrote in the yearbook “A great man is made up of qualities that meet or make great occasions.” You Don had those qualities and more. I miss you buddy.

I am so sorry to hear of Don's passing. Unfortunately we lost touch with each other since our years at Rutgers. We were roommates and close friends. We reconnected a little over a year ago when my daughter was considering colleges in Boston and we vowed to get together should I get there but unfortunately I never did. I was at Rutgers last week cleaning out my daughter's dorm room and as I sat in front of our old apartment I tried to reach out to Don at an old number that I had with no luck. I tried to reach out today by trying to find his phone number when I came across his obituary.

My prayers are with you all at this very difficult time. Don was a great man and will always be remembered and be a part of my heart.

Please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] or 973-628-1183

My husband and I met Don during the Frank McCauley administration as we all on the team who campaigned for him and continued into his terms as mayor....Don was without any doubt one of THE nicest fellows in that group of people.....always so friendly and polite when you'd see him, even after the McCauley years were over....So sad to realize what he has gone through the past years, and probably without a complaint....Rest in peace Don.....our memories of you will always be happy ones.

I was so sorry to read of Don's passing. I worked with (and for) Don many years ago during his earliest days with the City of Quincy. Although we did not stay in touch, I still remember him as bright, articulate and dedicated. He was blessed with natural leadership talents and had the special ability to relate to people of every status within the City. I admired his commitment to his responsibilities and, of course, I enjoyed his sense of humor. Reading about him today, I'm not surprised he went on to further impressive accomplishments.

I wanted to be sure to extend my sympathies to his wife and family from someone who knew and admired Don early in his career. I enjoyed working with him and I will pray that he rests in peace.
