Alexander Rice Obituary

June 9, 1991 - January 5, 2014 Alexander James Rice, 22, Spokane, WA, after a 20-month battle with brain cancer. A 2010 graduate of Lewis and Clark H.S., he was an avid rock climber, training and competing at the national level. Alex lived life; he skate boarded, snow boarded, wake boarded, water skied, snow skied, camped, biked, hiked, motorcycled, surfed, and just liked being out in the wilderness. He loved to fix things, take them apart, and repair them. He hated spending money unnecessarily. Alex invested a lot of time repairing and modifying his '89 Toyota 4-Runner, but would rather ride one of his bicycles. He once biked to Canada and back with a good friend. He rock climbed with his close friends in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado. He loved Priest Lake and Chimney Rock. After brain surgery and radiation: he hiked to the top of Mt. Charleston, a very high peak in Nevada, like it was a day in the park; he hiked the rain and bamboo forests of Hawaii with his sister Jasmine; he snorkeled with the sea turtles with his brother Owen and sister Ella. They adored their "big brother Alex" who could do anything. We all adored Alex and will miss him tremendously. Survived by his loving family; mother Jacquita Rogers (Matthew Inman), father Tom Rice (Heather), sisters Jasmine Perez (Stan and daughter Nayeli) and Ella Rice, brother Owen Rice, and grandparents, and his devoted friends in the rock climbing community, especially his girlfriend Sarah Moeser. Private cremation. Memorial celebration of his life to be held this spring at Deep Creek, one of his favorite rock climbing walls.

Alex,

I can´t believe it´s already been 10 years since we´ve seen each other.

I still log on to your WoW character every now and then and reminisce on all of the times we used to play together. Back in 2019 I created a successful guild named after your main character `Pangean´. We were one of the top guilds on the server.

Our friendship always meant a lot to me and I think about you all the time. I could always call you for advice and you always had my back. I remember when you started climbing and heights weren´t really my thing so you designated me as the "Professional Belayer" to make me feel useful and I´d join you on adventures to Minnehaha.

One of my favorite memories of you was at a party leading up to high school graduation where a bunch our friends were trying to get you to take a shot of vodka and you weren´t having it. I pulled you to the side said "Alex I have an idea!" For the rest of the night, you were taking shots all night and everybody was shocked. Little did everybody else know I was taking the shot glasses, emptying the shot glasses with water and you would act "drunk" for the rest of the evening. You were hilarious that night.

There are so many things I miss about having you here on Earth. I wish you were here to meet my son Tobias. You always inspired me to be a better person and follow my passions.

You climbed to heaven much faster than most to little surprise. You were always ahead of the pack in everything you did. One day I hope to meet again and thanks for watching over us.

Dear Alex,
It´s been almost 10 years without you. I think about you every day and I miss you so much. It pains me to continue growing up without my big brother.
Love, your ella

I think about Alex often.... his courage and spark for life always inspired me. He reminds me to live everyday to its fullest and lately I find myself lacking a bit in that department.
I was honored enough to get to know him and of all the souls inhabiting this planet, we need more people/souls like Alex! The world would be a better place...
Thank you Alex for your gifts - miss your face and strong spirit

May the memories made and times shared with Alex forever comfort you and help bring peace during this difficult time.

Dear Tom & Family,

We are so very sorry for your loss of Alex. Alex was an amazing young man; inquisitive, curious, kind and strong, with a keen sense of awareness. He was remarkably mature and lived more life in his 22 years than most do in a much longer lifetime.

His climbing blogsite and mantra ("Always Climb Up") is a remarkable testament to his gentle spirt, exceptional skills, and his love of nature, family and friends!

Remember, "What we have once loved, can never be lost. All that we love deeply becomes part of us!" Helen Keller. May your many wonderful memories of Alex and his brilliant spirit provide comfort to all of you now.

Alex, his parents, family, and his many, many friends are in our thoughts and prays.

May God bless you all!
