Barry HUSFLOEN Obituary

August 2, 1934 - August 18, 2024

On August 18, 2024, Barry E. Husfloen, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather peacefully passed away at the age of 90, at his home in Spokane, WA. Barry was born on August 2, 1934, in Mt. Vernon, WA, and moved to the Chewelah area at the age of 12, where he attended high school and met and married Sharon Burya, in 1955. Together they raised their daughter, Lyndee, and son, Barry L., in the Chattaroy area. Barry began his career with Kaiser Aluminum and was a well-respected process and maintenance specialist within the reduction organization. In 1974, he was transferred to a Kaiser Aluminum smelter in Ghana, West Africa, where he and his family had many extraordinary experiences and life long, unforgettable memories that he would later, in retirement recount with great fondness and humor as only he could tell. As good things do end, a drought in West Africa reduced the aluminum production capacity of the smelter to only 20%. Barry and many other expatriates were sent home to the Kaiser facilities in the States. Barry's career with Kaiser spanned over 40 years and he was highly regarded for his years of experience and knowledge in the aluminum industry.

Barry was an adventurer, avid reader, master mechanic and welder, experienced fisherman, collector of Hudson automobiles, prolific storyteller with an extraordinary sense of humor, racehorse owner, Gonzaga basketball fan, accomplished forester and woodsman, and human and animal nurturer. Most of all, he is remembered for his kindness, caring, and genuine compassion. He was an exemplary family man and will be forever missed. We were so fortunate to have him in our daily lives as long as we did, and we will forever celebrate his memory and all he did for us and others.

Barry is survived by his wife, Sharon, of 69 years; daughter, Lyndee; and son, Barry L. (Gayle); grandchildren, Sarah, Angie (Justin), Robert Barry, Nicole, Chelsey (Jason), and Meghan (Josh); great-grandchildren, Violet, Maya, Eve, Peyton, Mayson, Boston, Ellie, Cord, Jackson Barry, and Hadley; and faithful pet, Gunther Thor. He was predeceased by his parents, Virginia and Emmett Husfloen; a brother, Terry Husfloen; and great-granddaughter, Grace Chatterton Shemwell.

I was transferred to the Mead Works in 1983. I met Barry there and instantly found him to be one of the nicest guys and a very good supervisor. We both told each other of our experiences in Ghana. I enjoyed working with him. He was definitely one of the good guys!

To Barry's family,

Your husband, father and grandfather was very much respected at the Kaiser Mead plant. Several of us, my father, Uncles and cousins, had the great pleasure of working with this truly knowledgeable man in the potrooms in the Mead plant. He was always even keeled and always willing to help if necessary. Working for him was a treat because you'd always hear some great stories of work or adventure. Sorry to hear of your loss of a great human being.

Thoughts and prayers for you all,
Ed Hoffman
