Cynthia BERENDT Obituary

September 15, 1954 - June 15, 2024

Spokane Valley - Born on September 15, 1954, to Eugene and Wren Stern. Died June 15, 2024, from complications of dementia.

Cindy grew up in Spokane Valley and graduated in 1972 from East Valley High School. She attended SCC, where she became a certified nurse aide. She enjoyed sharing her compassion and kindness with patients. She also loved dancing and listening to music.

In 1976, while at a mutual friend's birthday party at Diamond Lake, she met her future husband of 46 years, Dan Berendt. The couple married in 1978. After their son, Michael, was born in 1980, with leukodystrophy, Cindy chose to take on the difficult task of providing his long-term care. Cindy was an amazing caregiver and made sure Michael experienced every possible opportunity in life.

Cindy grew and canned fruits and vegetables. She was an excellent cook and baker. She was well-known for her holiday cookies and candies she enjoyed sharing with friends and family. She also won the Washington State Wheat Growers Award for Fine Baking at the Pend Oreille County Fair.

Cindy loved family car trips, exploring the Oregon and California coastlines and enjoyed the warm February sunshine in Arizona. She is survived by her devoted brother, Gerald Stern; half-siblings, Teddy Stern, Jake Stern, and Velva Neff; along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A special thanks to Hospice House for comfort care during her final days, and also to caregiver, Judy, and niece, Kimberly Hunley, for their love and support.

Cindy was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be truly missed.
