Danny SCHARPENBERG Obituary

Danny Paul "Dan" Scharpenberg passed away in Casa Grande, AZ on September 4, 2024, after a life well lived. Surviving him are his wife of 51 years, Barbara Scharpenberg; his children, Jeff Scharpenberg, Tom Scharpenberg, Teri (Michael) Rogers, Jon (Christine) Scharpenberg; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughters, Kelli Scharpenberg and Lori Tobin.

Dan was born on May 20, 1941, in Colfax, WA, to Paul and Esther (nee Balch) Scharpenberg. He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and went on to earn a degree in accounting from Eastern Washington University. Along the way, he formed a band, where he played guitar – a skill he would occasionally put on display in his later years with family and friends – performing a mean version of Froggy Went A Courtin' with his baritone voice.

As a teen, Dan spent his summers working on the family wheat farm in LaCrosse, WA. This infected him with the farming bug, and he pivoted from Account Dan to Farmer Dan. He would spend the next 40 years growing wheat, raising cattle and being a fixture in the LaCrosse community. His later years would find him and Barbara traversing the country in their motor home and spending winters in California and Arizona. He was an enthusiastic golfer who was never bothered with the rule about playing the ball where it lay. He enjoyed flying model airplanes and spending time with his family and many friends.

His family would like to thank Foley and all of the staff of Lita Carin Group Home for the excellent care they provided to Dan in his last three years. His family will hold a private ceremony at a later date.
