Daphne Kohler Obituary

KOHLER, Daphne Christie Mrs. Daphne Christie Kohler passed away on Wednesday, September 15th in Spokane, Washington. She resided for more than fifty years in Maumee, Ohio, where she was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church. Born in Vancouver, B.C. on June 3rd, 1926, she left Canada with her mother and brother for St. Petersburg, Florida and then Ithaca, NY after the premature death of her father. In Ithaca, she met Harold Emerson Kohler and they were married on August 25, 1945. She lost her beloved husband of fifty-six years in 2002. Daphne attended Cornell University and subsequently received her BA in Education from Bowling Green State University. She taught home economics in the Maumee/Toledo area for sixteen years. Daphne was an avid homemaker, gardener and volunteer worker. She was an elder, deacon, mission-commission member, Sunday school teacher and confirmant mentor at First Presbyterian. St. Paul's Feed Your Neighbor and Habitat for Humanity projects benefited from her expertise in the kitchen. Daphne and Harold traveled in all 50 states; in addition they toured Canada, Germany, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Austria, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. They were members of the Perrysburg boat club from which they sailed and motored to fish for walleye. She is survived by sisters-in-law Jerry Kohler, Ana Mae Kohler and Jacqueline Christie, her four children: Deborah, Elizabeth, Peter and Susan Kohler; five grandchildren: Cristina, Emilie, Alison, Austin and Jessie; plus in-laws Karl, Wendy, Julia, and Joseph. When asked how she wished to be remembered, she said, "I have had four wonderful children and I would like to be remembered as a cheerful person." Her family would like to add, "Mother was one of the most generous, kind and optimistic people we have ever known." Services will be October 23rd @ 11:00 a.m at the Rockwood South Retirement Center. The family requests donations to Missoula Aging Services or Hospice of Spokane in lieu of flowers.

To the Kohler Family: Your mother was a lovely woman and a very special teacher and role model. So many of the things (including the great recipes!) I learned in her home economics class I still use and share with my children now. May God bless and comfort all of you during this sad time.

Most Sincerely,
Karen Partsch-Mayfield

On behalf of the Elder family our deepest sympathy to your family. Your father and mother were great friends of Bob and Dorothy Elder and I have know doubt they are all enjoying a game of bridge together with others that have passed away in their group.

My prayers go out to Mrs. Kohler's family. I had her for Home Ec at Maumee, and she truly taught me to cook. She was a great teacher and won't be forgotten.

To Daphne's family,

Your mother made such an impression in my life. I met her at First Presbyterian Church and became fast friends with her. We served on many committees together. She worked tirelessly to help others.

I loved visiting your parent's home on the Maumee River. Daphne was such a gracious host with such a warm heart. She will missed.
