David SANDLER Obituary

SANDLER, Dr. David (Age 61) Dr. David Sandler, who was so loved and respected by all who knew him, passed away on November 12, 2014. He was born in Stalingrad, Russia on March 14, 1953 to Emmanuel David Sandler and Cecilia Yakov Vidomsky. His mother was a doctor, and from a very early age she took David with her to the hospital where she worked. As a result, David knew that becoming a doctor was his life's ambition. He completed his undergraduate work in Leningrad, Russia, and received his medical degree from the University of Leningrad in 1976. He completed his post-graduate work in Canada and Boston, Massachusetts. In 1985, Dr. Sandler began focusing his medical training on cardiothoracic surgery. From 1985 to 1987, he was the Training Resident/Chief Resident in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada where he received training in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, and pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. His reputation continued to precede him. From 1990 to 1992, Dr. Sandler served as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Transplant Surgery at the University of Western Ontario Affiliated Teaching Hospitals in London, Ontario where he selected and managed transplant patients and gained experience with orthotopic heart transplant, single lung, heart/lung transplant surgery and organ procurement. With Dr. Sandler's distinguished background and technical surgical skills, he led the way in cardiothoracic surgery techniques and research. He presented new procedures in cardiac surgery and had demonstrated their uses to other physicians at international professional conferences. Dr. Sandler was highly recognized within the United Network of Organ Sharing, established by the U.S. Congress in 1984, which administers the only Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network in the United States. Dr. Sandler was also an accomplished and recognized author. Dr. Tim Icenogle met Dr. David Sandler in 1992 at which time Dr. Icenogle worked very diligently to convince Dr. Sandler to join his team as a partner at Sacred Heart Medical Center. Outside of the hospital, David's focus was his family. He was successful in bringing his only sister, Leonora, and her husband, Yuri, to Canada from Russia, where they all lived before Dr. Sandler joined Dr. Icenogle's team. David enjoyed art, photography, and travelling with his beloved wife of twelve years, Mischelle. Their love story was so special. As soon as they met, their lives were never the same. There was one thing that he definitely said he didn't like, and that was birds. Mischelle owned an exotic bird store; he fell in love with the birds too. David was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother-in-law, Yuri Chernyak. He is survived by his "My Beautiful Wife" Mischelle; his sister, Leonora "Lena" Chernyak; his nephew Mikhail "Michael" Chernyak (Melanie) and niece Maryanna "Marina" Chernyak (Robin Olsen), whom he helped raise; his great nieces and nephews, Oliver and Scarlet, and Natasha, Katrina and Niklas. In loving memory of Dr. David Sandler, a new patient care room in the expanded CICU (large, with city view) will be named in his honor. The cost of this naming opportunity is $15,000. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Providence Health Care Foundation, CICU Campaign in memory of Dr. David Sandler. There will be a memorial service, a Celebration of Dr. Sandler's Life, at the Providence Auditorium, 20 West 9th Ave., Spokane, WA on Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Sandler's family and the staff at Sacred Heart. He saved our son and daughter through the gift of life, and because of him we had 7 fantastic extra years with our son, Jeremy. Our daughter is alive thanks to you, and able to raise her son. My heartfelt thanks go out to his family. You should have had him so much longer and we know the time you had was even less because of the dedication he gave to his patients. Give Jeremy one of those big bear hugs you were famous for and play a video game with him.

Dr.Sandler
You and Dr. Icenogle saved my life three times during difficult surgeries. My wife Becky still remembers the kiss on her cheek as you hugged her and stated it was a tough one, as I lay in CICU after one of those hard fought surgeries.
You wrote the book on bedside manner, I still remember your gracious and loving way you always treated my wife and myself. It was always the bright time of the day when you made your daily rounds and visited me at my bedside.I recall telling anyone who would listen how wonderful you were to aid in my recovery during my surgeries.
I cannot express how much you meant to Becky and I. We both wept tears upon receiving the letter of your death.
Thank you for your wonderful smile and gifted hands.
Love, Dennis and Becky Swensgard

It's hard to imagine Sacred Heart without Dr. Sandler's warm, caring and genuine smile present. He dedicated himself to his patients and was always encouraging them and their worried families. He was my Dad and my families' rock during the years my Dad was his patient. A true inspiration and lovely man. Our prayers go out to him, his family, his patients and the staff who worked with him at the hospital. So happy the hospital is naming a new patient room in his honor. -- The family of Bob Langenheder.

Dear Sandler family! Please accept our condolence on behave of all classmates from St Persburg , Russia Medical School. David was very well loved by all of us. He was a very talented in everything, he was doing- piano player, actor and kind man. He was the first one, who crossed the border and became a super achiever in a new country and became a leader for all of us , followed him here and example of a dedicated doctor on both sides of the ocean. He will be in our hearts forever. All of us are in a deep sorrow. He did not have an easy life , but was going through hardships with his good sense of humor and soft tender love for his family members, coworkers, friends and patients.

O my God! O Thou forgiver of sins, bestower of gifts, dispeller of afflictions!
Verily, I beseech Thee to forgive the sins of such as have abandoned the physical garment and have ascended to the spiritual world.
O my Lord! Purify them from trespasses, dispel their sorrows, and change their darkness into light. Cause them to enter the garden of happiness, cleanse them with the most pure water, and grant them to behold Thy splendors on the loftiest mount. - 'Abdu'l-Bahá from Baha'i Prayers, p. 44

Dear Dr. Sandler,
There are no words to adequately thank you for all you have done for our lives and families. Your hands were prayers that God answered to provide renewed life and love into our lives. Your work was your worship of God as it was done in the spirit of service to all mankind.
Love,

Dr. Sandler not only saved my son Tim,s life once but a second time two weeks after his heart transplant when his gallbladder failed. He was so scared that he wasn't going to save Tim after 6 minutes of working on him, but he never gave up.He brought him back and I got another 12 years with my son and received a beautiful granddaughter and daughter-in-law.He was an amazing and caring man and loved to give hugs. Of all the people on the transplant team, he was the one I knew would give a straight answer and always the truth. His heart was as big as the universe. I will truely miss you and the world has lost an amazing man. Tell Tim hello when you walk through the gates of heaven. I am sure he will be happy to see you.
