Spokane – Mary "Eileen" (Shelledy) Hogan passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, surround by family and friends at the age of 81. She was born on March 28, 1944, in Iowa, while her father was in France during WWII, and raised in Greybull, WY. She was competitive in academics and athletics, becoming an All-State High School Softball player as a shortstop. After high school, she attended Carrol College in Helena, MT, studying medical technology.
A move to Spokane to get her Medical Technologists degree at Sacred Heart Hospital led her to meet her husband, Al. They were married on June 17, 1967. After a short stay in Coeur d'Alene, they moved back to Spokane, where they raised their three children.
Eileen's first job was at Sacred Heart Hospital followed by the Spokane Blood Bank. She would later become a stay-at-home mom, which she loved. She coached softball, was once the President of the Board at Cataldo School, and chaired the auction at Gonzaga Prep. She was so good, Prep offered her a job full time. She turned them down.
Instead, Eileen went back to school in her 40s to become an accountant. She received her degree at Eastern Washington University. She had the highest grade in every class she took.
After passing the CPA exam in one sitting, she worked at a couple places before she found her home. She was an accountant in the Gonzaga University Controller's Office. A place she loved. It also tied into another passion she found as an adult, an avid Gonzaga Basketball Fan and was Season Ticket Holder for over 30 years. To keep her emotions in check while she watched the Zags on TV, she would keep stats.
After retirement, Eileen and Al enjoyed travelling with family. They went to Europe and Hawaii many times. The also went to Belize. They frequently visited their children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Al Hogan; their three children and six grandchildren, Mike and Anne Marie (Autumn and Lily) of Spokane, Patty and Joe Dewberry (Joey and Kayli) of Fayetteville, NC, and Katie and Matt Anselmino (Lia and Allie) of Sacramento, CA. She is also survived by her four siblings, brothers and sisters-in-law, and a large group of nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Funeral Mass will be at the Chapel at Gonzaga Prep, on August 23, 2025, at 2:00 pm. A reception to follow at the Herak Club on Gonzaga University's campus.
In lieu of flowers, Eileen wanted donations made to the Ella McKeirnan scholarship at Gonzaga Prep. 1224 E. Euclid, Spokane, WA 99207. Online memorial page can be found at
