Ethan ALLEN Obituary

ALLEN, Ethan "Pete"

Ethan Allen, known as Pete to all who knew and loved him, passed away peacefully on June 6th, 2017. He was born in San Francisco, CA on August 29th, 1944 to Ethan and Elizabeth Allen.
Pete grew up in Seattle, WA and graduated from Seattle Prep in 1962. When Pete was only 6 years old, his father passed away so he was raised by his mother, his three sisters (Pamela Hazelton, Susan Caley and Judith Otto) and a close community of extended family and friends.

Upon graduating from high school, he began working in the retail industry at I. Magnin department store and at the 1962 World's Fair. It was during this time that he was introduced to his wife of 53 years, Stephanie York.

In 1966 he found his first calling to serve others and joined the Seattle Fire Department. Pete was very active as a Firefighter, received many honors and was often highlighted in the Seattle print media. He spent 13 years with the Seattle Fire Department and attained the level of Captain. During his Seattle Fire Department career, Pete was certified as an Emergency Medical Technician. He later was trained as a Paramedic through the University of Washington School of Medicine that led him to become a Paramedic Supervising Officer with Medic One, the first paramedic/first-responder program in the United States. He was also part of the Medic II team, a program created to take CPR training to the citizens of Seattle. Pete and his colleagues were instrumental in bringing advanced lifesaving skills to their community and the field of firefighting, and helped to save thousands of lives with their professional care.

After retiring from the SFD, Pete continued to find ways to leave his mark in the field of first-responder care. He began his next chapter with a new career at Spokane Community Colleges as an instructor. He taught and trained his students in Industrial First Aid, Advanced First Aid and Paramedic Advanced Life Support. He was loved and respected by his students and colleagues.

In retirement, Pete enjoyed family time with his wife Stevi; his two children, Christina Martin (Alan) and Brian (Mary); his Golden Retrievers; and especially the time with his four grandchildren, Katherine Allen, Abby Bartolick, Elizabeth Allen and Ethan Bartolick.

A long-time member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Pete served the church as a Eucharistic Minister, lector, servant and volunteer. Pete was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Pete was an avid golfer and was very active in serving the Esmeralda Men's Club, Esmeralda Senior Men's Club and the Inland Empire Senior's Golf Association.

Pete touched the hearts of those who knew him, loved his family deeply and was always the first to offer support and congratulations. He exemplified selflessness, empathy, compassion and unconditional love. He was a hero to many, and the memory of him will be cherished.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1PM on Saturday, June 24th, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 503 N. Walnut Road, Spokane Valley, WA 99206. The family will receive guests at a reception following the service at Spokane Valley Event Center located at 10514 E. Sprague, from 2:30PM to 5:30PM to share memories and toast to his impact on our lives.

A special word of appreciation is expressed by the family to the entire staff of Brookdale Nine Mile and Hospice of Spokane for their quality of care and assistance to our family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

I still share "that just rips my shorts" with friends. We need your sense of humor and humility now more than ever, Pete! I can only imagine how much his family misses him.

Pete was such a fun loving man and always positive to everyone. Teaching with him was an experience I will never forget. The world has lost a man with a huge personality! I know his family will miss him terribly.

A wonderful tribute to a wonderful man. In my mind's eye will always see him in his driveway anxious to talk to or help out his beloved neighbors.

I loved seeing Pete's smiling face when he came into the dental office where I work! I was friends with he and his wife outside the office so I always got a hello kiss when I called him back and loved the reaction of our other patients! He had a great sense of humor and a love of life that was undeniable. We lost one of the good guys when we lost Pete and my world is a little darker for it

Wow! What a loss! Pete was one amazing individual. As a colleague of Pete's, I had the privilege of seeing him in a variety of settings. He ALWAYS had a sense of humor--even in tense situations. More than once I heard him say, "That just rips my shorts!" I never heard anyone else say those words; they must have been original with Pete. He was humble, kind, thoughtful, and, most of all, a professional. He was ALWAYS willing to offer a helping hand to whomever needed it. Pete knew how to brighten the days of those around him. The world should be populated with folks like Pete. Our world would be a much better place in which to live.
