Forrest MARKHAM Obituary

May 13, 1940 - December 24, 2023

George Markham passed away on Christmas Eve after a 20+ year battle with Alzheimer's. He was born to Forrest Clifton Markham and Elsie Mae (Duvall) Markham. George and sister, Rose, moved often for his father's job. The family settled in Spokane where George graduated from Rogers High School. He joined the US Navy, serving aboard the USS Bayfield, then in the Naval Reserves until his Navy retirement in 1981. He married his sweetheart, Geraldine Kay Fawver, in 1961. George worked briefly at Kaiser Aluminum and on the Spokane police force, and for decades as a brakeman for Burlington Northern Railroad. George loved reading, motorcycles, camping, boating, and scenic drives. In retirement, he enjoyed bicycling, kayaking, and road trips with family. George and Gerry moved from the house they built in Chattaroy to Fairwood Retirement Community in 2014. The family is grateful for Fairwood staff's care of George since Gerry's passing in 2016. George was a faithful husband and provided for his family. He and Gerry were lifelong members at First Assembly in Spokane.

He is survived by son, Brian (Patsy) Markham; daughters, Shelley (Rich) Stevens and Lori (Matt) Russell, all of Spokane, WA; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings-in-law, Clarence Poppe, Neil and Jackie Mewes, Bobbi Ruby, and Billie Owen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned on February 17, 2024, at 1:30 pm at Colbert Presbyterian Church, 4211 E. Colbert Road, Colbert, WA. In lieu of flowers, a gift can be made to the Union Gospel Mission.

Forest was a 'Rail', in every sense of the word. I enjoyed working with him and always enjoy talking to him when I saw him at work. A hard working man no one would argue with. Never forget his smile, always had a smile. I missed him when he retired. I know he'll be missed by his family and those who knew him, he's a good Rail. RIP
