Gary BARTOO Obituary

BARTOO, Gary F. (Age 67) Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, left this earthly life on the 10th of November, 2018, surrounded by loved ones after a two and a half year battle with prostate cancer. He refused to let cancer define him and left a legacy that will forever impact those lucky enough to know him. Gary was born on May 7, 1951, at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, to Harry "Duke" and Delores "Dee" Bartoo. The family then moved, along with his older sister, Peggy, to Spokane, Washington where Gary spent his formative years. From a young age, Gary enjoyed being physically active and showed much natural aptitude and ability for many sports. He attended John Rogers High School and played on the All-State basketball team. It was during his high school years, that he met Kayleen (Johnson) Florey who would later become his wife and the mother of two of his most cherished blessings in this life; his sons, Gabe and Josh. Upon high school graduation in 1969, Gary was granted a "Chick Evans Scholarship for Caddies" to attend the University of Washington where he planned to study Aeronautical Engineering. However, with major layoffs occurring within companies such as Boeing, Gary decided to pursue Physical Therapy instead. Gary graduated from University of Washington in 1974 and moved his family to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to begin his first job as a physical therapist at Kootenai Medical Center, later opening his own practice, Coeur d'Alene Physical Therapy. From the beginning and throughout his long career, Gary cared deeply for each of his patients. They could feel his extra care and concern for them and he was a staunch believer in the importance of educating his patients about their ailment. It was apparent to all that Gary possessed a special healer's touchand what a powerful healer he became. Gary married Amy Pollard in August of 1986 and together they never slowed down staying busy with many community activities, hobbies, travel, and sports. Gary and Amy were blessed with the birth of Gary's third son, and precious treasure, Trey, in 1997. Throughout his life, Gary excelled physically. He was an Iron Man, before the term was even coined running 20+ marathons, triathlons, and climbing many peaks. Gary was also an avid golfer. It was a hobby that he enjoyed with family and friends. A long-held Father's Day tradition was playing in a golf tournament with his sons in which Gary enjoyed getting a hole in one in 2008. Above all, Gary was a family man, a man of strength, loyalty, passion and devotion. His family was keenly aware of his deep love for each of them. He will be missed every day. His example and the lessons he taught to all of us, will never be forgotten. Gary is survived by his wife, Amy Pollard Bartoo; three sons, Gabe Bartoo (Anna) of Rochester, Minnesota, Josh Bartoo (Kelsey) of Hayden, Idaho, and Trey Bartoo of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; four grandchildren, Jackson and Duke Bartoo of Rochester, MN, and Teagan and Ryker Bartoo of Hayden, Idaho; sister Peggy Barteau of Austin, Texas; uncles Buck Fitzpatrick (Joy) of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Bill Fitzpatrick (Judy) of Youngstown, New York; mother-in-law Silda Pollard of Post Falls, Idaho; brothers-in-law Steve Pollard of Issaquah, Washington and Harry Pollard (Merry) of Coeur d'Alene; former wife Kayleen Florey (Les) of Post Falls, Idaho; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and countless loving friends. Those of us who were privileged to be in his family and his friends will miss Gary greatly. A celebration of his life will be held in early summer 2019. Memorial contributions can be made to the Idaho State University Department of Physical and Occupational Therapy Gary Bartoo Student Relief Fund.

Gary was one of the most influential people I have ever met in my life. I was a PT tech for him back in the 80s as I was interested in becoming a physical therapist. Once I began working with Gary I knew I would pursue a career in physical therapy. I have been a PT now for 27 years and I attribute the motivation and encouragement from Gary as the one thing that spurred me on to meeting my professional goal. He will greatly missed. He wa a very kind and compassionate man. A rare jewel indeed.

Amy and Family, I went away on a two week vacation and came home to catch up on the local news. I was shocked that Gary had passed away as he was such a giving, kind soul! I was a patient of Gary's and I literally was in a deep depression with a frozen ankle that was in constant pain, when I say I was ready to give up on life that is an understatement! Your husband and father saved my life. Gary was very intuitive of people he knew that I was down, yet he made me see the light at the end of the tunnel! Within weeks of his expertise, care, and time I could walk without pain and knew I would be OK! I would run into Gary at the golf coarse and always Thanked him for he was truly an angel here on earth for many! He was an original, top shelf stand up man! He will be missed! Take care and God Bless The Barton Family! Conda

I'm sad to read that Gary passed. I know he's in Heaven and will be reunited with all of you in time. What a great physical therapist- the best I had as he was both skilled and gentle but also kind and proud of his family. Nothing I could say will ease your pain. I'm not in your shoes but you're in my mind and heart and I'm deeply sad for you. I hope your memories will ease those times where the loss hits the hardest. Thinking and praying for all of Gary's friends, relatives, and those close to him.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've never met anyone so kind as Gary, he had a beautiful soul. I was one of his patients and he helped me through two shoulder surgeries and countless other body ailments. I really enjoyed talking with Gary about skiing, climbing and being on the water. We had the same G3 backcountry setup and I loved sharing stories of skiing untracked powder. He was an excellent physical therapist and even better person. I am really going to miss him.

Dear Amy and Family, So very sorry to hear of Gary's passing. Gary was a very kind person, and I will always remember his thoughtfulness, compassion, and positive energy. Working with Gary at CDA Physical Therapy was fun, and Gary had the best sense of humor! ... always smiling, always caring. The time I worked with Gary and the Gang at CDA Physical Therapy will be remembered fondly and forever. It was magical.
