Gregory CHIPPS Obituary

January 7, 1948 - November 9, 2024

Spokane - Greg was born in Vernonia, Oregon to James and Mary (Fanger) Chipps. The family soon moved to Mountlake Terrace Washington. He lived there until age five, where was able to teach himself to read and began a lifelong love of the written word and learning.

He spent his formative years in San Diego, California, graduating from James Madison High School, with honors in 1966.

He went on to Pacific University where he spent many happy hours with his uncle Frank, aunt Barbara and niece Victoria Chipps. He nearly attained a Rogue scholarship.

He then entered a Benedictine monastery but had to leave due to health issues.

He took classes at San Diego State University. Eventually he was accepted into the graduate program in philosophy at the University of Arizona. He was employed as a custodian there and continued in a management capacity there until his retirement.

He then moved to Spokane, Washington where he worked for a number of years at Planned Parenthood. There he developed a close relationship with his maternal aunts, Rose and Margie Fanger.

He developed a pulmonary disorder which he succumbed to at Sacred Heart Hospital.

He is laid to rest at Heritage Cemetery. A tree planting is being planned for this coming spring.

Greg is survived by his brothers, Preston and Geoffrey Chipps; his aunts, Rose and Margie Fanger and Barbara Gambetty; his nephews, Nathan and Matthew; his niece, Sarah Chipps; his great-nieces, Allie, Tessa, and Cassidy Chipps; and his great-nephew, Leo Chipps.

He leaves a hole in the lives of those who love him. We miss his encyclopedic knowledge, his love of learning, his scholarship, his simple life and altruistic nature.

We hope he has found "That sweet golden clime where the traveler's journey is done."
