James Slavin Obituary

SLAVIN, James Thomas Sr., (Age 86) Of Spokane, WA. and Palm Desert, was taken to heaven Wednesday, March 3rd. Jim Slavin Sr., the beloved son of Joseph and Anna Slavin was born September 19, 1923 in Yakima, WA. He loved faithfully his sisters Joane O'Toole of Plentywood, MT and the late Rose Anita Berry of Bothel, WA. A spirited graduate of WSU and ATO fraternity, Jim was a proud veteran, married and created a wonderful life with his beautiful and loving wife, Joanne Harlow Slavin in Spokane. A faithful parishioner of St. Augustine Church, a hard working real estate professional, MIA and ARA designated, Jim served as former president for the IRWA, local president and regional vice president for the National Master Appraisal Institute and complimented his dedicated career with a lifetime love of handball and fitness through the Elks and Spokane Athletic Clubs. From playing basketball for WSU in Pullman, winning world handball tournaments in Canada and Ireland, water skiing on Lake Coeur d Alene, family tennis tournaments, his induction into the Inland Empire Hall of Fame Scroll of Honor and a golf highlight hitting a hole in one at Chaparral Country Club ... Jim was blessed with vitality. Perhaps a farmer at heart, Jim's passion for land recognized best through his purchase and management of the Diamond S Ranch, now a federal land conservatory designated in his name. A remarkably youthful senior, Jim will be missed dearly by his graceful partner and wife of 59 years, Joanne. His example and dedication to his family will be continued by his children, Jim Slavin, Jr., Connie and Rob Story, Lori and Bill Conroy, Carrie and Skip Slavin. He will be cherished forever by his grandchildren, Benjamin James Story, John Slavin Story, Joseph James Conroy, Peter William Conroy, Samantha Jane Conroy, Lauren Angelina Slavin and John Henry Slavin. Throughout his life Jim was blessed and surrounded by loving and good humored friends. We will all miss him dearly. A Vigil Service will be held on Friday, March 19th, 7:00 p.m. at St. Augustine's. Services are to be held at St. Augustine's Church in Spokane on Saturday, March 20th at 10:30 am. Your prayers are deeply appreciated and in lieu of flowers, we suggest donations to Gonzaga Preparatory School (1224 E. Euclid, Spokane, WA 99207) or Hospice House (PO Box 2215, Spokane, WA 99210).

Dear Family:
Pam & I were deeply saddened upon learning of your loss. Jim was a mentor for us all at the Elks & Spokane Club both on and off the court. God will certainly remember the many years he faithfully sung the Alleluia for Father Gobel at the early morning mass. Although we're out of town our prayers & thoughts are with you.

To the Slavin family-
Mark and I wish to express our deepest sympathy for your monumental loss. Mark has wonderful memories of Jim both professionally and also from the years of playing handball at the Spokane Club. I did not have the pleasure of knowing him but I was friends with Lori when she and I were in the Hotel business in Seattle. I know how much she cherished her father.
We will keep you in our healing thoughts and prayers.

Dear Joanne, I'm having a little trouble with this because we just visited briefly after the 8 AM mass two weeks ago, and he looked healthy and fit as ever. Jim and I shared many great moments in PNW handball tournaments over the years, and our fraternity and fellowship of handballers will greatly miss his ever present smile and friendship.
