Jean PETERSON Obituary
It is with heavy hearts, yet a spirit of joyful remembrance, that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Jean Cary Peterson on March 29th, 2025, in Spokane, Washington.
Born January 30th, 1951, in Santa Barbara, California, Jean was, first and foremost, a loving Mom to Todd and Heather. She was also a dear sister to Gale, Susan, and Don, and an aunt to Debbie, Tom, and Sage.
To her many friends, Jean was a devoted confidante, someone whose warm and joyful spirit made every gathering brighter. Her late basset hound, Kaylee Sue, and more recently, her "grand-puppy," Gretel, brought Jean endless amusement and affection.
Jean struck those around her as joyful, intelligent, optimistic, loving and selfless, with a humorous disposition and a memorable laugh that could light up any room. Jean was also determined and resilient, reflected in her journey from a self-funded college student, though professional life as a single working mother and teacher.
Jean found happiness in the simple pleasures of life: a warm cup of tea, a meaningful lunch with a dear friend, the satisfaction of tending to her vibrant flower and vegetable garden, and, above all, spending quality time with her kids, friends, and her beloved basset hounds. Jean had a fondness for the gentle hues of pastel colors, particularly peach and pink, which mirrored her own warm and gentle spirit.
For over 30 years, Jean dedicated her professional life to shaping young minds as a passionate elementary teacher in Spokane Public Schools. "Ms. Peterson" had a gift for making learning an adventure, and her impact on her students was immeasurable. With her spare time, Jean could be found buried in the pages of a captivating novel or engrossed in a PBS documentary or period drama. A longtime Gonzaga fan, when Jean wasn't able to make the game, she wouldn't miss it on TV, or the radio. With a vivid passion for performing arts, you could also catch Jean enjoying the theater or a concert.
Having been fortunate to travel internationally on a number of occasions, the landscapes and cultures of Europe left a lasting imprint on Jean's life, in particular Northern Ireland, where as a Fulbright Scholar, Jean famously shared tea with Princess Margaret.
Her commitment to service was evident in her dedicated volunteer work with Friends of Manito, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Kingdom for Christ Ministries. Jean was a proud member of the ADK teachers' sorority and loved her time with the group sharing a meal, or volunteering.
Jean's departure leaves a void in our lives that can never truly be filled, but we will forever cherish the vibrant tapestry of memories she wove. Her laughter and kindness will continue to warm our hearts.
