Jerry SULLIVAN Obituary

SULLIVAN, Jerry "Coach Sully" 1937 - 2014 Jerry grew up in Seattle and at 18 he entered the seminary, becoming a Jesuit Brother. Graduating from the University of Oregon, he taught Physical Education at Bellarmine and Gonzaga Prep. There he developed a winning cross country program. "Coach Sully" is considered by many to have pioneered young women's cross country programs in Washington State. What set him apart was his innovative use of "new" techniques such as yoga, winter training, and his encouragement of young women to embrace the sport of running. Jerry possessed the capacity to see the best in all people, but his ability to encourage young people to believe in themselves was perhaps his greatest asset. In 2010 this contribution was honored by his induction into the Washington State Cross Country Hall of Fame. His enduring belief in God and the power of the human spirit in every one of us continued to inspire his lifelong dedication to teaching and service. It was in this spirit that he lived and worked for 30 years on the Colville Reservation, developing the St. Michael's Mission. He married the love of his life, Ilene Sullivan, in 1991 and together they continued his work at the Mission. They moved to Spokane seven years ago, sharing their life of love and service as members of St. Joseph's Parish. Jerry Sullivan's life stands as an example of a life well lived. Filled to overflowing with family, friends, good deeds, satisfying work and gregarious play. He will live on in the hearts of the many lives he touched. Fully human, and fully Irish. The family would like to sincerely thank the people at North Central Care for their extraordinary compassion and loving care. Memorial donations may be made to Our Place Community Ministries, 1509 W. College Ave., Spokane, WA 99201. Rosary at 7:00 PM, Friday, November 7th, Celebration Mass at 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 8th, gathering in Parish Hall following the service at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1503 W. Dean, Spokane.

To my Brother Jerry Sullivan. Jerry befriended this 9 year old boy who was in need of a real man in my life. Jerry showed his love for me through acts of kindness, reproof, and generosity. Jerry would take me on trips to Seattle to meet his wonderful parents and to other places he enjoyed. He also taught me how to run long distance. A personal coach both spiritually and in life. My heart breaks to see him leave us. I am sorry Ilene for your loss. With many wonderful memories, Jerry see you in the New Kingdom.

I had the honor of caring for Coach Sullivan. I will always remember the smile on his face when we would do the handshake he taught me and how he liked to be tucked in with a certain afghan he said was made with love. What a blessing it had been knowing him and Ilene..... what a remarkable couple! Brought tears to my eyes several times witnessing their love for each other. God Bless you both and my prayers are with you Ilene.

It was because of Brother Jerry that I loved going to church at St. Michaels Mission on the reservation. Him and Ilene were the ones who helped my grandma get all of us kids to go to church and I truly believe that he was one of the biggest supporters in my life with God. He will be missed here in the physical world but he will live on in all of the lives that he touched and my thoughts and prayers go out to all who have ever gotten to know this wonderful man :)

Jerry was a bright light that lit up the lives he touched. He will be missed by so many, and I will be forever thankful for his friendship many years ago, for his kindness, his sense of humor and his sense of wonder. I met him in the late 60's at Gonzaga U during a summer term When my father died in Feb. 1970 I returned to Spokane and Jerry was there at the services and at my home taking me for long walks in the snow helping me grieve. What a friend, what a treasure.

Very saddened to hear, I will always remember his kindness during his time in Inchelium, Wa. I lived near the church when I was real young, he was such a good carpenter he allowed me to join hammering some nails in building onto the living quarters there. To this day I want a wood shop, love the smell and creativity that goes with building things. I will cherished those memories. :(

Such a loss to those of us here on earth but still a guiding spirit, now from above, for all of us who were fortunate enough to have our lives cross paths with Bro/Coach Sully.

One of my fondest memories, still, is his words of wisdom for when you were feeling tired in a cross country race. Just make a deal with God, he would say. Tell him, "Lord, if you keep picking up my knees I will keep putting them down"! Just classic Coach Sullivan. And it wasn't until I was a junior, I believe, that he let me in on the secret of why, when he shook my hand, he also always grabbed/squeezed my bicep. He said he could tell if I had been doing my push-ups or not!

Bro Sullivan, thank you for your kind spirit, and guidance you gave to me and many others in our formative years. Lessons for life that are with me today. May eternal light shine upon you! Rest in Peace, Bro.

One of my favorite memories of Brother Sullivan is when he talked a bunch of us into trying cross country skiing. While on the outing he started playing on our egos, challenging us to a race to the next corner or distant tree. Before we realized it we'd completed a conditioning workout:-). Bellarmine '80

Dear Ilene,
Jerry's obituary picture says it all. He never lost his gentle smile and the Irish twinkle in his eyes, both of which attested to his tremendous inner strength, integrity, sense of purpose, and deep faith in his fellow humans. I am honored and blessed to have worked with him from Bellarmine Prep to St. Michael's Mission. You are in my heart during this difficult time as you mourn his loss and adjust to life without him. My hope is that you will find consolation in fond memories of the years you had together and the deep love you shared.
Love,

Brother Sullivan- I knew him through my brothers at Bellarmine and then through my husband John Troup. He maintained interest in his students FOREVER- remembering events like it was yesterday. I remember him transforming the eating habits of the Bellarmine xc team through his example- yogurt and granola! Finally - his strong faith was apparent during our last visits in Spokane.

I went to high school with Jerry at Seattle Prep, where he was a student athlete, student body leader, and young man of great faith and energy. During his 35 years as a Jesuit brother, I had the privilege of working with him for three years at Gonzaga Prep from 1962-65 where he was a friend to all the students and a leader in the athletic department. He later became a fine coach and spiritual guide to students at Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma. His later years were spent working with the Colville Indian peoples near Incheleum with Fr. Pat Twohy. His wife Irene and his former classmates were a great support to him in his final illness. All who knew him will miss Jerry deeply.

Even though I did not know "Sully," as a former Jesuit Brother of the California Province, it would seem that Sully left a legacy through his life and work. Mark Twain once said that "the two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why." Sully found the "why" of life through his unrelenting devotion to inspire humans toward personal achievement. Well done, good and faithful servant!
