John BERDIS Obituary

John Myron Berdis passed away unexpectedly in Cheney, WA on November 20, 2021, at the age of 63.

John is survived by his wife of 34 years, Julie A. Berdis of Cheney, WA; daughter, Brooke Harrington and husband Seth, grandchildren Gavin, Milo, and Ashton of Taylorsville, NC; daughter, Julie M. Berdis of Nampa, ID; mother, Myrna Berdis of Cheney, WA; sister, Karen Wirth and husband John of Peters Creek, AK; brother, David Berdis and wife Jennifer of Norristown, PA; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, George Berdis of Cheney, WA.

John was born on February 16, 1958, in Greenville, PA to George and Myrna Berdis. He married Julie, the love of his life, in 1987. John started his professional career with the Washington State Patrol, quickly moving to working in the Governor's Security detail. From there he moved on to enjoy a total 18 years with the Cheney Police Department as a Reserve Officer and Radio/Dispatch from 1989-2007. John followed in the footsteps of both of his parents in working for Eastern Washington University. He served EWU as their Parking & Transportation Services Supervisor from 1998 – 2021 and was planning to retire in the Spring of 2022. Throughout their time together, John and Julie welcomed two children into their home, followed by three grandchildren and numerous pets.

John enjoyed traveling, camping, kayaking, and hiking. His days were traditionally filled with early morning coffee at McDonald's, the newspaper, and stopping off to talk with one of his many friends or colleagues who he may have run into that day. He took great pride in caring for and mowing his lawn. There were no happier times than "hunting bigfoot" with his grandchildren. His family remembers him as a devoted, loving, caring, and supportive man. John was a simple man, yet had a complex demeanor. He was handy, willing to help anyone, full of useful and useless information. A man that would drop anything for his children no matter what else was going on.

A memorial service is scheduled for 12:30 PM on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at the Cheney Congregational Church, 423 N 6th St. Cheney, WA 99004. Reverend Matt Goodale from the Cheney Congregational Church will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John's life. In lieu of flowers, please take time to do something with your family and loved ones to make special memories together. Condolences can be sent to Berdis Family, 1513 Ridgeview Dr. Cheney, WA 99004. The family would like to thank Cheney PD, who responded on the day of John's passing, for their response and support during this time; along with the outpouring of love and support from friends and family.
