COIL, John

John passed away at the age of 74 on 5/29/2021. He was born in Spokane on 9/17/1946. The Coil family lived in Bellingham, WA and Aberdeen, WA in the 1950s and 1960s. John entered St. Edward's Seminary in Kenmore, WA but decided to take a different path and finished high school in Bellingham, WA, graduating from Bellingham High School in 1964. He graduated from Gonzaga University in 1968 and joined the Army the same year. He requested and was granted a leave of absence from the Army in 1970 to teach high school with the Jesuits in Zambia, Africa. He returned to Spokane in 1972 and lived the remainder of his life here. He retired from the Spokane School District in 2012.

John's love for family, friends, music and sports was what made him special and loved by those who knew him. He was a fixture at local high school basketball and football games and was our family's #1 fan in the stands. He was an amazing piano player, playing for the sheer joy of music and often at the request of those around him. He made a lasting impression on the lives of many and will be missed dearly.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Marian Coil, and his sisters Jan Coil and Kathy Haberl.

He is survived by his sisters Linda (George) Hushman of Coeur d'Alene, ID; Patty Coil, Carol Coil and Mary (Jeff) Cooper of Spokane; niece Sarah Andrews and nephews Doug Hassenpflug, Eric Cooper, Bryan Cooper, Joseph Haberl and many great-neices and nephews.

A Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 1:30 pm at Holy Cross Funeral and Cemetery Chapel, 7200 N. Wall St., Spokane, WA. Online tributes may be made at www.holycrossofspokane.org.
