John STUART Obituary

July 3, 1927 - August 1, 2024

Camas - John was born in Spokane and spent his early years in Spirit Lake, Idaho. John's sister, Betty Lou, joined the family in 1932, and they moved to Spokane in 1940, after the big fire at Spirit Lake closed the Panhandle Lumber Company Mill, where his father worked. He graduated from John Rogers High School in 1945 and, eventually, enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was in North Africa and Europe past the end of WWII. Returning home, he drove trucks for his father's company and attended classes at Kinman Business University over the winters. There, he met Laura Mitchell and, in 1951, started their 73-year journey together.

Using his accounting skills, John started at Washington Water Power Company (now Avista), where he worked through various positions, including one of two original computer system operators, moving on to Power Supply Scheduling and retirement in 1988.

John and Laura were Scottish Country Dancers and avid travelers, visiting many countries around the world.

He leaves his wife Laura; sons, David (Chris), Robert (Geri), and Gary (Kim); with six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Covenant United Methodist Church, at 11:00 AM, on 28 September, 15515 Gleneden, Spokane, WA 99208.

John's urn will be placed in a memorial wall at Greenwood Cemetery.

Dearest Laura ... So very sorry for your loss. John was a kind and sweet man. I remember him fondly. As you may recall, I rode in John's carpool for many years -- always considerate and always on time. (**) My daughter also rode with John for a while in 1977 as a baby (sitting on the back floorboard) and we would drop her off and pick her up from the sitter. She is now 47. What a memory! I also worked with John when he was a computer operator. My job required having a lot of interaction with John and he was so professional and helpful and, as I said, so kind with a great smile. Most importantly, I remember how much John was devoted to you and so proud of his kids. I remember you fondly and send you and your family my many blessings, love, and warmest thoughts. Terry Syms

I met John at exercise class at (Washington Water Power) Avista. We ended up running during lunch as we trained to run Bloomsday on company teams for the event. John was the one who kept track of our time and I guided him thru the crowd.
He will be missed, good honest hard working man who was good with the numbers.
