Joyce FARRAR Obituary
1927-2022
Joyce Mae Farrar was born to Mildred and Oscar Franke on October 29, 1927. She graduated from West Valley High School in 1942. After John Dewey Farrar returned from WWII, Joyce and Dewey's parents met at the Old Mill tavern in Millwood and decided their two kids should go out together. Shortly after that, Dewey asked her out on a date, and that began their life together. They were married at the Millwood Presbyterian Church on July 18, 1948. Then, bought a house in the Spokane Valley where they raised their son Steve Farrar, and daughter Suzanne Farrar.
Joyce was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, friend to many, and savior for many animals throughout her life. She left this world on April 21, 2022 in the arms of her daughter, Suzanne Savall, to join the love of her life, her husband of 70 years, John Dewey Farrar.
Joyce loved creating delicious meals for her family, and friends, creating a beautiful home with Dewey, and playing bridge. They moved to Moscow, Idaho in 1977. It was at that point, that her real calling in life began. Along with Dewey, they donated their money and time to build and begin the Latah Animal Shelter in Moscow Idaho. In the shelter's first two years, nearly 1,000 cats and 600 dogs found forever homes. During the 8 years that the shelter was in her dedicated care, no animals were euthanized due to the network of veterinarians, financial donators and foster homes. Joyce was a friend to all animals.
Joyce had a sweet laugh. Her sense of humor brought much joy to those around her. She is greatly missed and will never be forgotten. Her family believes she is in heaven with Dewey, her many friends, and the thousands of animals she loved and saved.
Joyce Farrar is survived by daughter, Suzanne Savall, son, Steven Farrar (wife Alonna Farrar), grandson Zeveri Farrar (wife Sarah Otto-Farrar), and granddaughters, Tara Farrar-Weerakkody (husband Thushara Weerakkody) and Jenna Minniti (husband RC Minniti) and great granddaughter, Mila Farrar.
Many thanks go the staff that helped cared for her at Evergreen Fountains and Valley Pines Retirement Home.
The family will have a private celebration of her life.
