Michael DOWLING Obituary

It is with incredible sadness that we announce the passing of Michael J. Dowling on February 7, 2025.

Mike was born on September 13, 1951, to Bill and Marie Dowling in Spokane, and was the fifth of seven children. He was raised on the family farm in Rosalia, WA, where he graduated from Rosalia High School in 1969. He would go on to receive his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education from Eastern Washington University.

Mike's career as an educator spanned 34 years, 33 of which were spent in Central Valley School District. He served as CVA President and taught at both the elementary and middle school level, where he also enjoyed coaching. During his time spent as a teacher at Greenacres Elementary, he met the love of his life, JoAnn, and they were married in June of 1986. By marrying JoAnn, Mike also gained two beautiful little boys, TJ and Jeremy, whom he loved dearly. They would eventually welcome two more amazing children, Katie and Will, to the family.

Following his time in education, Mike enjoyed many years working at Costco, both as a greeter and in the Hearing Aid Department.

Mike's primary focus throughout life was family. He doted on his children and grandchildren, supporting them in their passions and their education. Teaching the kids how to fish, ski, ride a bike, and drive a car was all "Papa's Job." Mike was a huge fan of the Gonzaga Bulldogs, the Washington State Cougs, and the Seattle Seahawks and rarely celebrated one of their victories without his wife or kids by his side. His spirit lives on in the wind that blows over the grain fields on the Palouse, the cheers at the stadiums and arenas throughout Eastern Washington, the applause in the audiences at a local theater, the twang of a banjo, the warmth of a good whiskey, and, most importantly, in the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure to know him.

Mike is survived by his two brothers, Patrick Dowling and Dennis Dowling; sisters, Dianne Henrickson and Monica (Paul) Schrader; his wife, JoAnn; sons, TJ (Brittany) Lenhartzen-Dowling, Jeremy (Nicole) Lenhartzen-Dowling, and Will Dowling; and daughter, Katie Dowling; as well as by his seven grandchildren, Jayden, Taylor, Noah, Zea, Madison, Kennedy, and Owen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded by his mother and father, Bill and Marie Dowling; his sister, Joanne Barrette; and his brother, Dave Dowling.

A Celebration of Life will take place in July 2025. To leave condolences for the family, please visit Mike's Tribute Page at www.hennesseyvalley.com.

No one but the family will know what a wonderful man Michael was. His dedication to his family goes unmatched.
To see your smiling face in the picture shown (just taken two days before his passing) says so much. His Irish Eyes were smiling right from his heart. Your passing will always be a resounding loss that will forever be with us. You are loved.

My sincere condolences to Mike's family, friends and colleagues. Mike was my 4th grade teacher at McDonald elementary in 1976-77. He was a charismatic, young teacher then with a large presence. He read us Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows, two of the more impactful books for gradeschoolers and I'm sure all of us still remember that. Some years later, I would have his sister Diane as a teacher at Evergreen Jr High for 8th grade. I was later able to connect with Mike at Costco as he marked my receipts. Mike's legacy as a teacher will carry on in the memories of his students, younger and older and he will most certainly be fondly remembered and missed.
