Neal Wilson Obituary

WILSON, Neal Lowe Neal Lowe Wilson was born December 17, 1943 in Spokane, WA. He was son of the late Roy D. and Hedra H. Wilson. Neal was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1963-1965 as a radar acquisition repairman at the Nike missile site in Fort Bliss, TX. On the advice of his family physician, he attended the Providence Hospital School of X-ray Technology in Seattle, WA. He graduated in 1968, specializing in interventional radiology as a radiologic technician. He was accepted at Duke University into the Physician Assistant program in 1970, graduating in 1972. He returned to Seattle and served at Providence Medical Center as a Radiology PA. He was soon named Radiology Administrator, serving in that capacity for 21 years. In 1994, the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville invited Neal to be Radiology Administrator for both the Clinic and St. Luke's Hospital (then Mayo). He worked with the physicians and staff for the next 11 years, bringing state-of-the-art radiography to the Clinic. Under his leadership, Mayo became among the first medical institutions to adopt filmless radiology. Neal never lost sight of medicine's true goal: placing patient needs and their emotional well-being first. In 1997, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, which eventually led to his retirement in 2005. Neal extended his kind, caring and generous nature to everyone he met. His generosity was only out measured by the enormity of his heart. Neal felt deeply and genuinely, and took pride in caring for his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judy, son Christopher of Sammamish, WA, daughter Pamela and husband Joseph Ehrbar of Edmonds, WA, son Erik and wife Kristina of Jacksonville, FL, son Gregory of Los Angeles, CA, two grandchildren, Danielle Wilson of Sammamish, WA and Joey R. Ehrbar IV of Edmonds, WA, as well as his brother Thomas D. Wilson and wife Doris of Lamona, WA. He has many nieces, nephews and cousins, innumerable colleagues and friends and will be missed both personally and professionally. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in honor of Neal L. Wilson to the Mayo Clinic for Parkinson's Disease Research. Please direct donations to Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, 4500 San Pablo Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32225. A memorial service honoring Neal will be held Thursday, August 27, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 545 A1A North, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. Reception to follow. A service in Seattle will be held at later date. Please sign the online guestbook at www.pontevedravalley.com.

Thinking of Neal brings a smile to my heart and face.
In the late 70's I worked in HR and helped staff Radiology. Neal could work the system! But he always had a smile ...
and I remember that baby he delivered in the corridor!

My prayers are with your family. Neal was a wonderful, kind man. I really missed him when he left Seattle. He was a great teacher and had a knack for teaching without seeming to do so. I first met him as an x-ray student from OIT. He had just opened Providence Hospital to our clinical rotation. He made us welcome from the first day and showed so much confidence in our abilities though we were new at actual patient care. Nearing our last days as students, the five of us played pranks on Neal. He was delighted at being punked. I will always remember his smile and his easy way with everyone. God has a special place reserved for him. May God ease your hearts.

Dear Judy and family -

We are very sad to hear about Neal. Darrel remembers fondly growing up with Neal and the bird hunting escapades around Lamona and along Crab Creek. After we all settled in the Seattle area, the occasional reunions, your wedding and birth of our children. The coincidences of mutual acquaintences through Jan's employment - the Deignans and the Perrys. There are many memories and now sadness. Our prayers and thoughts are with you, the children and grandchildren and to Neal's brother Tom and wife Doris.

Neal was a very admired Director of Medical Imaging , not only in the Seattle area, but on a National level. Even after his retirement, he kept in contact with many of colleagues to stay current in the industry.

Neal was not all work. He enjoyed the the benefits that comes with being a Director of Imaging, with dinners out with his colleagues and the wonderful shareing of his life exeriences, both professional and personal.

Our profession has lost an inspiration to excell even under difficult situtations, and man who demonstrated true leadership in a manner of great effectivness.

He will be missed by many.

To the family of Neal Wilson. Until about six months ago I have had no contact with Neal, Graduation from Odessa High in 1962 was our last meeting, although I have kept track of Neal through his brother Tom. In my last conversation with neal I reminded him of the great duck hunting trip we had on the ranch in Lamona. He did remember that occasion and we had a great laugh. I will always enjoy looking at that picture of the two of us and our duck limit for the day.

Judy and family:
I was so saddened when Michael told me about Neal's passing. He was the sweetest man to me from the time he hired me at Providence, picking me up in the Bronco on the snow days and taking us to dinner when we were in Jacksonville for a conference. I will remember how he liked those date/walnut treats for his birthday. I will especially remember when Greg and Neal visited me at my home at Christmas time while I was going through chemo. He will have a special place in my heart forever. Love and prayers to you and the 'kids'. May God bless you and give you peace and comfort.
