I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Omar will never be forgotten.
For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you .
I Salute You.

To the family of Omar, I taught Omar when he was a student at McCorristin. Omar would always talk to me about his dream of being in the Army and I always knew he would do great things. I have taught many students through the years, but Omar always stood out in my mind as a smart, well rounded, driven man. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He has given the ultimate sacrifice and is a true American Hero. Thank you, Omar for your service to this great country.

I want to express my deepest sympathies to the Vasquez family. I went all through St. Anthony's school with Omar and I'm very proud to have been friends with him during those years. He was an all around outstanding human being. If more people had some of the qualities that Omar had, the world would be a much better place. Ever since I can remember, serving in the military is all he wanted to do. It's all he would talk about, think about, and dream about. Very few of us these days are blessed to do in life what we dream about as children. Omar was one of the lucky ones. That's why whenever I think of you, my thoughts will be filled with happiness instead of sorrow because you got to fulfill your dream. Say Hi to Patrick for me. RIP

My last image of Omar is him dragging two chairs across the lawn and telling me “Hey Tio, let’s have a talk, just you and me!”. During that conversation I realized the little boy I knew and loved had become a man, a soldier, a leader……and I got to know you all over again. As I promised you, next time we get together, we will discuss all those books in our list, so get two chairs ready at the other side of the rainbow…See you there!!

Omar, nino querido,
I met you as a little boy, at St. Antony's School. You were at my son's class, and played soccer with him. You had a little puppy love on Olga, my daughter and wrote her a poem and made some paper flowers to her. I told Olga to save for when she would be a grown up and remember childhood. Today she is an adult and married. We cried together remembering the sweetheart you were, and she told me she still have those mementos, and that was the first time someone was nice to her. Thanks Omar for everything. I talked to you again when you asked me to be your friend on facebook, I felt honored, and talked to you couple of times. I prayed for you when you went to Iraq, looked at the pictures you posted. You were a truly soldier . And US should be very proud of you.
Tu estaras para siempre en mi corazon. My little English I learned with you. Love forever, mi querido nino.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to 1LT Omar J. Vazquez our Brother-in-Arms . To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Omar. And to Omar it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Omar, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,307 military Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Omar’s family and loved ones.
