Patrick McKENNA Obituary
Patrick J. McKenna, aged 80, peacefully passed away on July 26, 2023, at Fieldstone Memory Care in Yakima, WA, surrounded by his loving family and a dear friend. Pat was born on April 25, 1943, in Spokane to Leo and Ethel McKenna (McCreight).
Growing up in Spokane, Pat attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic grade school, Gonzaga Prep ('61), and spent a year at Gonzaga University before his appointment to The Naval Academy ('66). Serving as an Ensign, he dedicated five years to active duty and later retired as a Commander after an additional 20 years in the reserves. During his time in Spokane, he met his first wife, Betti Reilly, and together they had two daughters. Their journey led them across California and the east coast as Pat served in the US Navy. Eventually, they settled in Idaho Falls, where Pat embarked on his engineering career at the nuclear reservation. In 1972, he relocated to Kennewick, WA, and began working for Hanford in various engineering positions, ultimately becoming the Hanford fire protection engineer.
In 1986, Pat married the love of his life, Jean, and they embraced life to the fullest, cherishing family moments by the pool at their homes in Kennewick, Benton City, and Prosser. Pat had a passion for working the land and spent countless hours woodworking, creating cherished pieces for his daughters and grandchildren. For 30 years, he and Jean would escape to Mexico for two weeks each year, often accompanied by family and friends. It was their favorite place to unwind, and Pat often joked about going two weeks without ever having to wear shoes! When at home, Pat dedicated himself to caring for their rescue animals and serving the community through organizations such as Meals on Wheels and the Knights of Columbus.
Pat is preceded in death by his beloved wife, W. Jean, his grandson, Will Ensley, his parents, Leo and Ethel, his sister, Nanci Harder, and his brothers-in-law, Tom Harder and John Hernandez.
He is survived by his sister Michele Hernandez of Spokane, five daughters: Lisa Archer (Eddie) of Spirit Lake, ID, Michele Fendrich (David) of Vancouver, WA, Shannon Richardson and Jill James (Brian) of Yakima, WA, and Sharon Ensley (Randall) of Shawnee, KS. Additionally, he leaves behind thirteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Pat's legacy is one of love, service, and a deep appreciation for his Irish heritage. While we hold onto the countless memories and experiences we shared with him, Pat will be greatly missed.
Arrangements have been made for a Rosary at Holy Family Catholic Church in Yakima, WA, on Friday, November 3rd at 5:00 pm. The Mass of Christian burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prosser, WA, on Saturday, November 4th at 11:00 am. Following the funeral, the Rite of Committal graveside service will take place at the Prosser Cemetery.
