Peter LANTING Obituary

LANTING, Peter Wyndelt "Pete" Of Moscow, Idaho, passed away December 10, 2012 of complications from thyroid cancer at Kindred Transitional Care in Lewiston, Idaho at the age of 88. Pete was born November 17, 1924 on a cattle ranch in Rogerson, Idaho, to Dutch immigrants, John "Jan" Timmer Lanting and Grace "Grietje" Visser Lanting. Pete graduated from Hollister High School in 1942 (Hollister, Idaho) where he was on the basketball team and was named to the Idaho High School All State Team his junior and senior years. Pete enlisted in the Army during WWII and served as a Technician Fifth Grade in 1945 and 1946 until his honorable discharge after the war in 1946. Stationed at Camp McQuaid in California as an assistant to the psychiatrist in the Military Prison, Peter participated in quelling prison riots which resulted in severe injuries to his head and nose. He attended Central College (Pella, Iowa) in 1946 before attending the University of Idaho on a basketball scholarship in 1947 and 1948. Pete then returned home to Rogerson, Idaho to ranch and farm with his dad. Pete married his bride of 64 years, Verna Mae Ganschow on November 25, 1948 in Twin Falls, Idaho. Together they brought their only child, Tamolin Rue Lanting, home to the Salmon Tract in 1950. In 1962 Pete moved with his wife and daughter to Quincy, Washington where he managed the PJC Commercial Feed Lot. In 1972 he became an interim manager for CENEX Corp. faming cooperatives throughout the northwest. In 1987 Pete and Verna moved to Anchorage, Alaska to be close to their daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren. After heart surgery in 2008 which left him in poor health and need of constant care, Pete again moved to join his daughter, this time in Moscow Idaho, so she could provide the care and assistance he needed. Throughout his life, Pete's greatest interests were his family and his community. For many years he was a 4-H horse club leader and was an active church member wherever he was living. He was a member of the United Church of Moscow for the past several years. Above all else, however, Pete's primary focus was always on celebrating life and enjoying time with his family and friends, whether it is eating a meal together, fishing, horseback riding, camping, or just sitting around talking and laughing. Pete was preceded in death by five siblings: William J, Anna, Pieternella, Adriana and Jacob Luke. He is survived by sisters, Abeldina Greco, Howell, NJ and Cleo Jean Fehling, Alpine, CA and brother C.M.(Cornie) Lanting; Twin Falls, ID and, by his wife Verna Mae Lanting, his daughter Tamolin Leonard Lanting and her husband Jerry Leonard, Moscow, Id and three grandchildren and their families: grandson Phillip Lanting-Leonard with his wife Jamie, Clarkston, WA, and Pete's great-grandson Mason H; Laura Bielak with her husband Jesse and great-granddaughter Tanner R., Golden, Co; and, Deborah DuBois and her husband Wyatt, Moscow, ID. Pete will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but departs leaving them with unlimited memories of loving and fun times and many stories to tell over and over again. The funeral service will be held Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at White Mortuary in Twin Falls, Idaho. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum. A reception for family and friends will follow. Another memorial service is being planned at the United Church of Moscow after the holidays. Memorials are suggested to Moscow Adult Day Health or to Good Samaritan Moscow Village. Friends may also make donations to the Hollister Community Presbyterian Church. Local arrangements have been entrusted to SHORT'S FUNERAL CHAPEL, MOSCOW, ID, and online condolences may be sent to www.shortsfuneralchapel.net.
