Philip Andrew HEINE

HEINE, Philip Andrew (Age 87) Passed October 27, 2014. Phil, a native of Spokane was born August 19, 1927 to Edward and Anna Anderson Heine. He attended Logan Grade School and graduated North Central High School. During this time he was active in Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Phil was drafted into the United States Army in 1945 where he was an Instructor in the Signal Corp. He received an honorable discharge in 1946 and enrolled in the University of Washington Architectural School. In 1950 he was called up for active duty in the Korean War. Phil was a reservist with the 453rd Engineer Battalion. He served two years in Korea attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. While in Korea he participated in designing many bridge and highway projects. He was a recipient of the Korean Service Award and the U.N. Ribbon. He was discharged honorably for the second time in 1952. He developed an early interest in architecture. At age 16, he obtained his first drafting position with a local Spokane firm. In 1962 he received his Washington State architect's registration and began his own practice in downtown Spokane, maintaining an office in the Hutton building until his death. Phil was also licensed in Idaho, Montana and South Dakota. He specialized in commercial and industrial projects, with more than one thousand projects in four states. Scouting was a lifelong love of Phil's. As an adult he served on the Boy Scouts of America Council Advisory Committee and received the Silver Beaver award, the Council's highest recognition. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks #228 and became the Exalted Ruler, served as chairman of the Tuesday's Speaker's Club, Business Men's Pilot Association, the Masons Tyrian Lodge #96, the Moose Lodge and the American Institute of Architects. Phil had many hobbies and interests. Flying was a passion. He obtained his Private Pilot and Commercial Pilot's License and owned several small planes. He was an enthusiastic downhill skier and a regular at 49 Degrees North, seen on the slopes well into his late seventies. He was an amateur photographer and enjoyed backpacking, biking and boat building. Phil was an avid mechanic often seen running around downtown Spokane in his beloved yellow and white Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. He is preceded in death by his parents and younger sister, Anita Joy Heine Standal, and survived by two nieces and two nephews, Joy (Michael) Standal Heller, Gooding, Idaho; Stanley (Loretta) Standal, Bliss, Idaho, Darlene (Daniel) Standal Nemnich, Boise, Idaho and Eric (Jeannie) Standal, Boise, Idaho. Phil is remembered as a dedicated community servant, as a generous uncle that rebuilt cars and gave them as gifts to his nieces and nephews and more importantly as a mentor and a person anyone could count on for help with any life or practical issue. He was much loved and will be missed. A Funeral Service will be held at Heritage Funeral Home at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 7, 2014 with graveside service to follow.
