Quentin KING Obituary

January 3, 1921 - June 6, 2024

Quentin King, a beloved father and grandfather, caring neighbor, dedicated educator, and devoted Christian, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 6th, 2024. Born on January 3, 1921, in Sweetwater, Idaho, Quentin was the youngest child of George Thomas King and Sylvia Marguerite Rowe. In 1924, the King family relocated to a farm north of Chewelah, Washington, where Quentin spent his early years in a picturesque rural setting. He attended Fairview, a one-room schoolhouse, and graduated from Jenkins High School in 1937.

In the fall of 1939, Quentin enrolled at Washington State University. He enlisted in the Army Enlisted Reserve on July 27, 1942, in preparation for service in World War II. Quentin served valiantly in the European Theatre with the 201st Medical Battalion, 76th Infantry Division, as a surgical technician, participating in the Battle of the Bulge, the Siegfried Line, and the Ardennes Forest. After his service, he returned to WSU in January 1946 and graduated in 1947.

Quentin's life took a joyous turn when he met Naomi "Peggy" Flentie at WSU in 1947. They married in June 1948 and were blessed with two children: Ellen (McKinney) in April 1949 and Roger King in June 1950. Their union lasted until Peggy's passing in 1979.

Quentin dedicated his professional life to education, teaching and serving as Principal of Grand Coulee High School for three years before spending thirty-one years at West Valley High School in Industrial Arts. His summers were spent building two homes in the Spokane Valley and volunteering with the Boy Scouts, enjoying various outdoor activities.

In 1981, Quentin met Jean Hatchett at a square-dancing event in Spokane Valley. They married and shared a loving relationship for the remainder of his life.

A devoted member of Millwood Presbyterian Church since 1953, Quentin was active in the church community for as long as his health permitted. His other passions included gardening, clock collecting, rockhounding, and various types of wood and metalworking.

Quentin is survived by his wife, Jean King of Spokane Valley; daughter, Ellen McKinney of Burlington, WA; son, Roger (Norma) King of Auburn, WA; and grandchildren, Heidi Kenoyer, Donna Gray (Patrick), Doug Kenoyer (Megan), Adam King, Cameron King (Lori), Erica King, Cambria Gray, Taylor Kenoyer, Rae Kenoyer, Joshua Gray, Olivia Gray, Oliver Kenoyer, and Dayton King.

Funeral services for Quentin will be held at Millwood Community Presbyterian Church, 3223 N Marguerite Rd., Millwood, WA 99212, at 2 PM, on July 6th. Quentin will be interred in a private family ceremony at the Pioneer Cemetery in Chewelah, Washington.

Dear Ellen and Roger,
I am so sorry to learn of your dad's passing. He lived such a full and wonderful life. I remember him so well and he always had that great smile. My memories of you and your family are so dear. I pray that you are comforted and at peace in knowing that your Dad loved Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and that he is now with the Lord.
Take care and you are in my thoughts so often. Prayers for all of you.
He will be dearly missed.

We are all better for having known Quentin. He was a true gentleman, always willing to share his knowledge and skills with those of us in the clock collecting club. For the last 20 years or so, he would say he wasn't buying any green bananas, but he sure outlived them!

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jean, family and friends.
