Richard BYRD Obituary

BYRD,
Richard Bourne

Richard Bourne Byrd, 82, died on April 3rd, 2012 during a hiking accident while touring Cuba.
He was born on November 17, 1929 to Charley Lee and Elizabeth Byrd, in their farmhouse in Lentner, Missouri.
In these rural beginnings, he developed a lifelong passion for learning and a drive for excellence. After eight years of education in a one room school house, he went on to graduate from high school in Shelbina, Missouri. He then received his undergraduate degree from Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. He earned his medical degree from the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1954, being in the top 10% of his class. Dr. Byrd completed an internship at the St. Louis Children's Hospital, his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine, University of Minnesota in Rochester, Minnesota and a few years later in Pulmonary disease at the same facility.
He belonged to the American College of Chest Physicians, American Thoracic Society, and American College of Physicians. He was board certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. He received many honors for his research in each.
He served for over 20 years as a physician in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Colonel in 1980. He then joined the Pulmonary Medicine Department of the Rockwood Clinic in Spokane, where he continued to practice medicine and compassionately serve his patients until his death. Dr. Byrd was a pulmonary disease specialist with a particular interest in asthma and served as a clinical associate professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, WA. He authored over 67 professional medical articles on lung disease.
In addition to his dedication to his patients, Dr. Byrd also had a passion for travel and adventure. His explorations took him from the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the base camp of Mt. Everest to treks in such places as Nepal, India, and Bhutan. He was active in the Spokane Canoe & Kayak Club and along with Laurie, was a veteran of wilderness river trips. They paddled together off the Galapagos Islands and Greenland, canoed Alaska's Noatak River into the Bering Sea, kayaked the Strait of Magellan in Chile and mastered 400 miles of whitewater in a canoe on the Nahanni River in Canada, among many other adventures. Throughout the course of his journeys, all seven continents were reached.
A lifelong athlete, Dr. Byrd enjoyed badminton, racquetball, biking, running, and hiking. He completed the Portland Marathon in 2009, just before he turned 80.
As a dedicated and loving father, he enjoyed sharing his passion for travel by leading his family on annual month long tent camping tours throughout the US and Europe during their earlier years. He taught his children to appreciate and respect nature, culture, history, art and music.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Linda.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Laurie (Lauretta); his two sons, Robert and Dean, and their wives, Lynda and Jean; his granddaughter, Heather Zarn and her husband, John; as well as his younger brother John Frederick Byrd and his partner, Jack Poquette.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in memory of Dr. Richard Byrd be made to Central Methodist University, 411 Central Methodist Square, Fayette, MO 65248 , or to the St. Louis University School of Medicine, 221 N. Grand Blvd., DuBourg Hall, Room 319, St. Louis, MO 63103
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Dr. Byrd is planned for Friday, April 27, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church in Spokane.

Dr Byrd was my hero. I served under him while he was the Chief of the pulmonary/critical care fellowship at Scott Air Force Base. I learned so much from him. He was absolutely a brilliant and a great role model.
We all wanted to be just like him!
I think of him often and his wonderful example for me in my own life.

I only met Richard on the trip to Cuba, and was walking next to him when he fell. Previous to that, he was having a wonderful time and was a delightful fellow tour companion. I always remember what his brother, who was also on the trip, said. "My brother loved to travel and that is the way he would have liked to have spent his final days". Both Richard and his brother John were/are exceptional individuals, the kind who find the enjoyment in every experience, no matter what the day brings. Sending love to the family.

I had the privelege to work with Dr. Byrd on the TB unit at Scott air force base. He inspired me to become a Cardiopulomary technician in the Air Force. He was always willing to teach,

We were on that last great adventure of Dr. Byrd's to Cuba. He and Laurie were the first people we met on the flight from Miami to Havana and we had some delightful time touring and lunching together. Dick was classy, interesting and easy to be with. We think of him daily, yet we knew him for only a limited number of days; we can only imagine how much he is missed by those who loved him so well and for so long. Our prayers go out to Laurie and John.

I am saddened with the loss of Dr. Byrd, who probably saved me from suffering more from a lung disease, not curable but controllable. I will miss his wit, candor, and true professionalism. I do hope he will be replaced here on Earth by an MD equally as qualified.
God's Mercies, Ed Wollweber

Dick was a good friend and our hearts go out to Laurie, Heather, Dean, Bob and his brother John. He was modest about all his many accomplishments and always wanting to learn new things through travel and appreciated the arts like opera. He took wonderful photos when travelling and shared them with others. What an example of a life well lived!

I rode the Hiawatha Trail with Richard and my good buddy, his son Dean...he was passionate about VW Westfalias and while driving up to his house, Dean calls and says, "Dude, you have to drive your 69 Westfalia to my parents...my dad needs to see it!" I turned around and drove the bus up...Richard dug that I practically lived in my bus! He will be missed...RIP.

My husband and I were among the fortunate travelers in the National Geographic group accompanying Dr and Mrs Byrd to Cuba. He was a pleasure to be with. I always enjoyed discussing both past travels and our daily programs in Cuba. We all missed him and Laurie after the unfortunate accident. We were blessed to have had him with us for the beginning of the trip. His adventurous spirit will remain with us always. Louise and Vinnie Flynn

Dr Byrd meant more to me than I can ever express. I have been seeing him for years at Rockwood. My wife died recently and I cancelled an appointment with him. I just didn't want to go. Shortly after he left for Cuba I received a certified letter from him saying that I shouldn't let it get me down, get back, make another appointment. I was overwhelmed with his concern. I will miss him terribly. My deepest regards for Laurie and family.
