Robert CONRAD Obituary

Robert "Bob" Peter Conrad, age 93, passed away on May 18th, 2023, in Spokane, WA. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who died peacefully in his home surrounded by family. He was a caring and very giving man who will be missed by his family and friends. His life was a true example of a well-lived life.

He was born in Everett, WA, on March 11th, 1930. He spent his younger years living in Grangeville, ID, and then moved with his family to Spokane, WA, during WWII.

Bob graduated from North Central High School in 1948 and then joined the Navy, serving in the Korean War. After leaving military service, he attended Eastern Washington University. He graduated in 1955 with a master's degree in education. Bob was a highly respected teacher and taught in the Spokane school district for 31 years.

Bob married Geraldine "Gerry" Gray in 1957 and they were happily married for 65 years. They both had a passion for travel, spending the early years of their marriage teaching school overseas. Bob and Gerry continued traveling all over the world and visited over 65 countries, traveling well into their 80s.

Bob was an avid golfer who throughout his life shot two holes in one. When not playing golf, he enjoyed working in his yard or his garden. He also enjoyed seeing his friends at the Hi Neighbor Tavern, earning the nickname "One Beer Bob". Late in his life, his favorite thing to do was sit outside on his patio with Gerry and enjoy their beautiful view of the Spokane River.

Bob is survived by his wife, Geraldine; daughter, Colleen; son, Dan, and his wife, Jennifer; and his grandsons, Jacob, Zachary, and Nicholas Conrad.

Services will be held Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 2:30 pm at Riverside Memorial Park, 508 N Government Way, Spokane, WA 99224.

I saw this obituary in the paper and wondered, "Is this the Mr Conrad I had in the 5th grade at Bryant Elementary School back in 1967?" I had moved back to Spokane in the middle of the school year. Mr Conrad was very welcoming. I was a quick learner and one day when I finished the classroom assignment early I pulled out a book and started reading. Mr Conrad saw this, paid me a compliment for using my time productively and encouraged my classmates to follow my example. Mr Conrad is one of three teachers I remember having a positive influence on me. The other two were Mrs Romine, my 5th grade teacher at East Avondale Elementary in Topeka, Kansas, and George Chalich at North Central High School.
