Steven SHAGINA Obituary

SHAGINA, Steven F.
(Age 54)

"Steve" or "Shag", as he was known to many, of Coeur d'Alene, ID passed away Wednesday, November 16th, 2016. He was born in Spokane, WA on August 9th, 1962 to Fred and Beth Shagina.
He grew up in Spokane, where he attended University High School. During high school he played basketball and was named twice to the All-City team in addition to placing at the state tournament. Following his high school career, he earned basketball scholarships to Lewis Clark State College and Spokane Community College. Steve finished school at Eastern Washington University where he received his bachelor's degree in accounting and went on to earn his CPA certificate.
After college, he moved to Bethel, AK working as a CPA for several years until settling in Coeur d' Alene. When he was first back in Coeur d'Alene he worked as an assistant controller for the Bunker Hill Mine. After leaving Bunker Hill, he was the business manager of the Libraries of Spokane for 22 years, until he retired in 2013. Steve had two daughters Jordan Andrea and Symone Nia Shagina.
Steve was a big sports fan, especially of basketball. He was a longtime fan of Cougar football and Gonzaga basketball. He always volunteered to coach his daughters' basketball teams which he did for many seasons, and loved nothing more than spending time with his kids. Never one to shy away from competition, he was a Hoopfest and dunk contest champion who played rec league softball and basketball well into his 40s until he "retired", only to come back more times than Michael Jordan. He had many friends and was loved for his great sense of humor.
Steve is survived by his two daughters Jordan and Symone, as well as his mother Beth Shagina and sisters and bothers-in-law Lori and Stan Gfeller, Kris and Mike Elgas along with five nephews and one niece.
In lieu of flowers, please send a charitable donation to the Make a Wish Foundation.
A memorial will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church on Wednesday, November 23rd 2016 at 10am with reception to follow. The church is located at 919 E. Indiana Avenue, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814.
