Stuart Evey, Former Co Founder and Chairman of ESPN Passes

How does one begin to pen an obituary for a legend...? Stuart Evey was a self-built larger than life phenom- enon.

A maverick pioneer and the personification of what it means to think outside the box. Charismatic, eloquent and a bit of a mad man...his life experiences were boundless, intoxicating, often hilarious, and always unforgettable. His tenacious genius turned oil into gold in 1979 by convincing his fellow executives at the Getty Oil Company to fund and subsequently launch ESPN with Stuart at the helm. To this day, Dick Vitale, Dan Patrick, Roy Firestone and scores of others have attributed their successes to Stu with the startup of ESPN and what is now the global world of sports television. After negotiating the sale of ESPN to ABC in1984, Stu went on to lending his expertise and name to multiple startups, never quite able to retire.

He dedicated himself to his family; wife, Mary; daughters, Christine and Susan; grandchildren Ulyana, Christopher and Lily; and every other young person who sought his mentorship. He remained heavily dedicated to his beloved fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta, often touring the country serving as a role model and inspiration to all his young up and coming brothers. He published his story, "Creating of an Empire: ESPN" in 2004. One would need nearly 85 years to truly understand the legend of Stu Evey, but his spirit will live on in the blood of every obsessed entrepreneur and sports fan to come.

Stu was a strong, fun personality. I was an 18 year old freshman at the UW Fiji house and Stu was finishing up as a 25 year old senior. His personality and sense of humor ruled the day. A terrffic human being.

Stu was a people person, and made a connection with everyone. He had a way of connecting with others, in a perceptive and caring way. I'm glad I knew Stu for over 25 years. His sense of humor, intelligence, zest for life and generous spirit have all been life-changing for many of us. I will miss him greatly.

In Stu's book he said: I've been at the right place at the right time (that's luck), and have been fortunate enough to seize the moment (that's life).

Ours's is a very special friendship that has lasted the test of a lifetime. It is a gift I will always cherish and you will always be my Big Brother.

I thank god for the gift He gave me to be a part of your life. You will forever be in my thoughts and prayers.
