News Death Notice

MONAHAN, Norman "Rod" 88, of Springfield, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, March 5, 2016. Born May 5, 1927 and raised in Shadyside, Ohio, Rod was the son of Charles and Laureda (Gress) Monahan. He graduated from Shadyside High School in 1945 and joined the U.S. Navy after graduation. Rod went on to receive a B.E.E. from The Ohio State University. He was in several Honorary Societies: Phi Eta Sigma, Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi and Theta Tau. Rod retired as manager of the Springfield Division of the Ohio Edison Company after 38 years of service, which included various positions in Akron and Elyria, Ohio. Rod was one of the nicest and kindest people to ever know. He loved to travel and vacationed in all 50 states. He loved the game of golf and was an avid Ohio State football fan. He was active in the community for many years. His activities over the years include: AAA Board of Directors, Boy Scouts of America Board of Directors (receiving the Silver Beaver Award in 1978), member of the Van Dyke Club, The OSU Alumni Association, I.E.E.E. Dayton Chapter, Professional Engineer State of Ohio, Springfield Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, United Way Board of Trustees, YMCA Board of Directors, 27 year member of the Springfield Country Club, Springfield Rotary Club President 1983-1984, Springfield Urban League, University Club of Springfield, Community Hospital volunteer, Springfield City Schools Volunteer STAR Program, and a member of First Christian Church where he was a member of the Loyal Berean Sunday school class. Rod was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Erma (Schroeder) Monahan and a brother, Jerry Monahan. Surviving members of Rod's family include his fiance', Wilma Crummie of Springfield; two daughters, Monica Monahan of Ft. Myers, Florida and Molly (James) Sass of Port Clinton, Ohio; sisters, Marilyn Hughes of Shadyside, Ohio and Ella May Page of Crestline, Ohio; sister-in-law, Leah Monahan of Bellaire, Ohio; six grandchildren, Heidi (Jason) Kersey, Bethany (Dan) Koestner, Scott (Molly) Sass, Laura Sass, Max Johnson, and Alex Johnson; and three great grandchildren, Ramble, Mason and Avenly. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. Friends are invited to join the family for brunch at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, 3638 Middle Urbana Rd. A celebration of Rod's life will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Craig Grammer officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church GSOC.

Rod was a true example of a Godly man. He was a great father in law and unbelievable mentor. I admired your Dad Monica and Molly. Your father was a rare find, and you were fortunate to have him as your father. I know he will be missed by so many,people.
