Alan Lebowitz Obituary

Dr. Alan I Lebowitz
Dr. Alan I. Lebowitz, 81, of Greenwich, CT, passed away on February 9, 2022 at home surrounded by family. Alan was truly a modern-day renaissance man who treasured the world around him and his place in it. He embraced science, technology, music, art, and literature. Alan also loved to make people laugh and he always tried to share his unique appreciation of the world. His curiosity was insatiable and his humor was a driving force.
Alan enjoyed life to its fullest, maintaining his curiosity and wonder of the world throughout his life. Whether it was mastering a new song on the piano or guitar, enjoying a NY Philharmonic performance, sailing or kayaking on Long Island Sound, practicing medicine, or even taking in the view from an airplane window, Alan was always investigating, always making new discoveries, and always finding joy and fascination in everything around him.
Alan was born on December 3, 1940 to Herman and Bertha Lebowitz in Philadelphia. He grew up in northeast Philadelphia, attended Northeast High School, and followed his personal dream of becoming the first physician in his family.
Alan married Harriet Fisher on August 19, 1964 and cherished her and their two children, Cathy and Peter, for the rest of his life. He was also a loving and dedicated grandfather to Zoe and Eli who greatly admired and benefitted from their grandfather's zest for life.
Alan proudly served as a major in the US Army from 1969-1971 as a physician and hematologist, taking care of service members in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After North Carolina, where Alan and Harriet made lifelong friends, the family headed to Connecticut, first in Stamford and then Greenwich.
Alan practiced internal medicine and hematology in private practice in Stamford, Darien, and Greenwich for nearly 50 years. He was also an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine where he took care of hematology patients and taught students, residents, and fellows. He was loved by his patients and all the people who worked with him. He was a remarkable physician who not only cared deeply about his patients but always used the full breadth of science and medicine to seek solutions to difficult medical problems in thoughtful ways. His focus throughout his entire career was always on expanding his medical and scientific expertise to achieve excellence in providing medical care to patients with empathy and humor.
After retiring, Alan helped establish a foundation in honor of his friend and colleague at Yale. The Bernard G. Forget Hematology Scholars Program was established to support research efforts of hematology residents at Yale.
Alan will be missed by many but most intensely by his wife, Harriet, his two children, Cathy and Peter, his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, and his grandchildren, Zoe and Eli.
Contributions in memory of Alan can be made to the Bernard G. Forget Hematology Scholars Program at Yale Cancer Center. Gifts can be made at the following link by typing 'Forget Fund' in the blank: https://tinyurl.com/ForgetFund.

Such a great Doctor & Person! Dr. Lebowitz was our Mom's Doctor, she spoke so highly about him, we all became patients of his. Years later my daughter worked in his office. Small World. You are so missed Dr. Lebowitz. God rest your soul.

In 1978, when we first moved to Stamford, I had a burning fever at work in Manhattan. We didn't have a new doctor at the time, so we called Dr Lebowitz' office and he agreed to meet us at the Stamford Hospital ER.
He was always generous with his knowledge and his time, even after we became his regular patients.

Thinking of the wonderful Dr. Lebowitz. Just went for my annual check-up with my current doctor. Very good, but not the same as the uber-caring, kind, and funny Dr. Lebowitz to whom I went regularly for over 30 years. He is missed.

Today on Valentine's day I send warm wishes to you, Alan's family. I was a patient for 30+ years. His name was given to me by Dr Orloff at Yale who said go in and talk to him and see if he is the right dr for you. I went in and we talked and I then asked him if he minded if I would look up info or bring him articles or had a different view on things, how would that be for him. His answer was 'I count on that, I would welcome that!' We were matched at that point! What I discovered was the he was an exceptional diagnostician as well as an exceptional human being. I was blessed to have had him in my life. I always felt I had someone who was there regardless of my maladies. Honest, forthright and compassionate. A true renaissance man. As Queen Elizabeth said at the loss of her husband "Grief is the price we pay for love." God bless you all and know you are not alone. Teresa Hughes

I continue to miss your knowledgeable and caring doctoring, Alan. When I came with dilemmas problems and queries, you always had advice and solutions specific to me as an individual as I think you had for all of your patients. That, as well as your warm congenial and supportive relationship with each patient was so invaluable and we thank you for that and miss you still as always, Doc Lebowitz.

Our deepest condolences to Dr. Lebowitz ' Family. Dr. Lebowitz was such a great Doctor he was always so caring of his patients, he gave some great advice & he sure had some humour to make his patients laugh as well. We were saddened to hear he had passed away. He was our Family Dr. for many years. My Mom missed seeing him after she moved to Arizona. My daughter Nicole had worked for him in the Darien office. I remember being so happy to see him quite some time ago when he came into LePain Quotidien Canal St for breakfast and I had the pleasure to meet his sweet wife. We have wonderful memories of a great man and Doctor. May he rest in peace.

Sincerely with love,

Although I have not been in contact with Dr Lebowitz in many years, I will always remember his professional, excellent care and concern for all his patients. He truly was the best ! Please accept my deepest sympathy at this time. Sincerely, Nancy Jamroga Rondano

As a professional colleague, it was an honor whenever Alan asked me to participate in the care of his patients. He had so many fine attributes: thoughtfulness, concern, compassion, intelligence, integrity, humility, humor. They combined to make him a true prince among physicians. These same qualities made him, in his everyday life, an extraordinary gentleman. Harriet, and the children, there are no words for your loss. Yet his memory will most surely be a blessing.

A condolence note to Dr. Lebowitz´s family as he was my family´s internist for many years. He was such a gentleman - an intellect - a man who had passionate interests for music, science and devotion to his practice and patients. He will be remembered with great fondness.

I would like to express my condolences to Dr. LebowItz´s family. Dr.L was my doctor for over 30 + years when he was back on Washington Blvd., in Stamford. I grew up in Philadelphia. We used to chat about Philly during our appointments. I even gave him a copy of my CD. He was a very caring man. The last time I saw him he was walking down Sound Beach Ave in Old Greenwich. We spoke briefly and he told me to stop by the office. RIP Dr. L.

What a loss. Dr. Lebowitz was legendary in my family because they heard me speak about him so highly -- as a physician and a person. I met him when I was 17. He cared for me from that time until I left the East coast at 52. He was a genuine father figure to me, and I couldn't have asked for better. His patience, humor, insights about life, priorities, and, of course, his expert care -- well, one always felt like one was in the best of hands. I recommended him to many friends over the years, and -- after seeing him -- they shared my high opinion of him. I feel most fortunate to have had him in my life, and I'm sure I'm not alone. I will miss him greatly, and send my most sincere condolences to his family.

Broke my heart to learn of this news. Alan was brilliant doctor and a truly patient and compassionate man. I was a patient of his for nearly 30 years and I am convinced that I am still here because of his diagnostic brilliance. Being a bit too independent minded, I was likely not the easiest of his patients for him to work with, but he always came through for me personally, and also helped my mother immensely, as well as my French parents in law when they would visit. I know to a certainty that he will be missed by all who knew him.

Alan was a God-send to us for many years until his retirement. We can not tell you how he helped us. We relied on him and he always came shining through. We enjoyed his sense of humor and we admired his knowledge and grace. He will be sorely missed.
It was an honor to have known him and we were blessed to have had him in our lives. He always spoke so highly of his family and we wish you comfort at this time knowing that he is resting in peace. He made a difference and he will never be forgotten.
