John Preli Obituary

JOHN V. PRELI a life-long resident of Stamford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2008 at McLean Healthcare Center in Simsbury, CT, with his daughter by his side. Born June 7, 1911 he was the son of the late Fortunato and Mary Quaglioroli Preli. John was retired from the Southern New England Telephone Co. where he worked most of his life. John enjoyed many interest and hobbies. First and foremost, an avid shooting enthusiast, he was a life member of the National Rifle Association and the Cos Cob Revolver and Rifle Club. A staunch Republican, he served on the Stamford Republican Town Committee, was recipient of the Action Leadership Award from them in 1996 as well as of a plaque of appreciation in 2000. He served as a traffic hearing officer in Stamford and was made an honorary deputy sheriff with the Stamford Police Department. Enjoying fishing, he was a long time member of the Halloween Yacht Club. He also served on Night Patrol on the waters of Stamford Harbour during WWII. For a number of years, he enjoyed seaplane flying out of Stamford Harbour and was a former member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was a member of the East Side Cardinal Athletic Association, the Telephone Pioneers of America and a long time member of St. Mary's Parish in Stamford. John will be remembered by all who knew him. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret Preli; a sister, Veronica Gleason of Stamford; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of fifty-two years, Mary Bino Preli; a brother, Louis Preli; two sisters, Virginia Dacey and Edith Feulner. Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Wednesday, July 23 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 9:30 AM on Thursday, July 24 and proceed to St. Mary RC Church, 566 Elm Street, Stamford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Darien. The family wishes to thank the staff on unit 4 at McLean for the nine years of compassionate and excellent care provided by them. I have knewn John many years. He worked with my uncle Casey Jones in SNET. My husband, Alex Kohut knew him in the rifle association. He was a wonderful man.
