James Schellhamer Obituary

James K. Schellhamer, Hazleton, retired captain of the Hazleton Police Department, died Monday afternoon at his residence following a two-year battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Audenreid, he was the son of the late William and Elizabeth "Betty" Evans Schellhamer.

James was a member of the Hazleton police force for 39 years, rising from the ranks of patrolman to captain. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the U.S. Army, where he earned the Bronze Star.

James was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Hazleton Chapter 18, the National FOP, the board of directors of the Police Athletic League and helped organize the 50s Rock and Roll Shows for the FOP.

He was a member of the Freeland American Legion Post 473, and the Freeland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5010.

Some of James' favorite things were traveling and shopping with his daughter and brother and playing with his puppies.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his brothers, David and Charles.

Surviving is his wife, the former Diane Bradish; daughter, Amanda, Hazleton; brother, Billy and his wife, Peggy, Gerald, Mo.; mother-in-law, Helen Bradish, Hazleton; niece, Rachel Schellhamer, Freeland; and several nephews and great-nieces.

Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fierro Funeral Service Inc., Hazleton. A funeral service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Shawn Simchock officiating.

Relatives and friends may gather from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home for a procession to Calvary Cemetery, where interment will take place.

COVID-19 restrictions will be in place.

Donations to a local FOP or the Freeland VFW or American Legion would be appreciated by the family.
