Wayne C. Doherty of Sugarloaf Twp., and formerly of Hazleton and West Hazleton, passed away early Sunday morning in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born in Honesdale, he was the son of the late Andrew and Viola (Swendsen) Doherty.
He was a 1957 graduate of Honesdale High School and began his collegiate studies at Scranton University. After two years at "Da U," he transferred to St. Bonaventure University and graduated in 1961. Wayne was ordained in 1965. Prior to retirement in 2001, he was a Luzerne County probation officer for 30 years.
Having devout faith, he was a member of the former St. Francis of Assisi Church, West Hazleton, and currently a member of Holy Name of Jesus, Church of Transfiguration, West Hazleton. Wayne was an active member of both parishes and also the Knights of Columbus.
He served as the recording secretary of the Fraternal Order of Police, Christina Lodge 84.
In addition to his parents and his in-laws, Jack and Helen McBride, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, the former Muriel McBride, in 2006; and his brother-in-law, Jimmy McBride, in 2016.
Surviving are his loving family, sister, Dotty Ann Veterano and husband, Ted; brother, Carl Doherty and wife, Marie; sister-in-law, Betty McBride; brother-in-law, Brian McBride and wife, Ellen; cherished niece and nephews, Tara Veterano-Arber; Ted Veterano; Kevin Doherty; Sean Doherty; Anthony Doherty; Matthew McBride; and Christopher McBride; and numerous grandnieces and nephews.
Also surviving are the treasured Boyle girls, Mary Rose, Colleen and Lynn. Wayne was a devoted uncle and took extraordinary pride in all of his nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name of Jesus, Church of Transfiguration, West Hazleton.
Interment will follow in St. Gabriel Cemetery, Hazleton.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the church prior to the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, Wayne would want you to express your love to those you value. Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of choice.
