Alice Zawko Obituary
Age 93, of Elmira, NY, passed away on Sunday, June 17, 2012, at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. Alice was born on August 26, 1918 in Elmira, daughter of the late Tracy and Mabel (Simpson) McDowell. Alice retired from Chemung County License Bureau in 1982 as a clerk. She is survived by her daughter, Judy Romanowski of Plantation, FL; son, William Zawko of Fort Myers, FL; granddaughters, Michelle Romanowski of Plantation, FL and Susannah Zawko of London, KY; grandsons, Jonathan Zawko of Fort Myers, FL, Daniel (Taryn) Zawko of Shelbyville, KY, David Zawko of Tampa, FL and Stephen Zawko of London, KY; great-granddaughter, Ella Claire Zawko of Shelbyville, KY; daughter-in-law, Arlene Zawko of London, KY; several nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Michael in 1978; twin sister, Marion (Mrs. Nicholas) Chalk in 1992; and sister, Gladys (Mrs. Charles) Bohn in 1998. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at 10 a.m. at James D. Barrett Funeral Home. Pastor David Cook of the Elmira Christian Center will officiate. Interment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will also be held in August in Plantation, FL. Family would like to thank the staff on 6th floor of the Chemung County Nursing Facility for their devoted care for Alice during her stay.

Bill and Family, My condolences to all! It was a pleasure seeing you Bill after decades. None of us will ever forget the reunions. I know it was always something we looked forward to as kids! I am very sorry to hear of Aunt Alice's passing. Some of my fondest memories are the wonderful Zawko family "pool parties" that Uncle Mike and Aunt Alice would have at their home and the good times we all had together there. Our prayers to her, you, and your families. Take care.

Judy & Bill and famlies,
Sorry to hear of your mother's passing. We visited her and uncle Jimmy a few times over the years at the nursing facility and took them cookies I made.(they didn't last long!)I too have many fond memories of her and your dad as well at all the family functions that were held at both the houses on Oakdale Drive. She is in God's hands now and I'm sure being well taken care of. May God Bless all of you at this time of sorrow.

I grew up next door to my Aunt Alice and have too many fond memories of her to list here...but the one thing that I always remember her doing was she would put her hand on her (tiny) stomach and say "I'm getting so fat!" Well she was so far from being fat!!! The other thing about her that sticks out in my memory was that anytime my sister or I was sick, she was the first to offer Mom assistance...always there for her. God rest her soul now. Michelle, Judy & Bill: I will not be able to attend the service in August as I will still be at my house in Bear River, NS.
