Herbert Williams Obituary

Williams, Jr., Herbert A.

Herbert "Herbie" A. Williams, Jr., age 96, of Corning, NY passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Absolut Care of Three Rivers. Herbert was born September 26, 1918 to Herbert A. and Ruth (Taynton) Williams Sr. During WWII, he served in the 8th armored division as a Captain in the Army. He was severely wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, March of 1944 and received a purple heart. Herbie worked as a member of the government troops for one year following the conclusion of the war. Upon returning home, he married Jean in July of 1947 and resumed his 43 career with Corning Glass Works, retiring in 1981. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Guldenschuh in September of 2008. Herbie was in the Corning Sports Hall of Fame for his bowling skills; he treasured the challenge and camaraderie of the bowling leagues. He was also a lifetime member of the Corning VFW and the Corning Elks Club. Another one of his pastimes included watching and supporting the NY Yankees. Herbie is survived by two daughters, Mary Lou Williams of Rochester, NY, Ann (Michael) Martino of Corning, NY; three sons, Jeffrey (Brenda) Williams of Hammondsport, NY, Gary (Madelyn) Williams of Montour Falls, NY, Bruce (Norma) Williams of Fayetteville, WVA; sister, Betty Carpenter of Erwin, NY; seven grandchildren, Katie (Rob) Malehorn, Benjamin (Allison) Williams, Emily (Anish) Williams, Taynton (Ashley) Williams, Jeanne Williams, Craig Williams, Matt (Cindy) Williams; and six great-grandchildren. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Lewis and John Williams. Family and friends are invited to call at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 from Noon-2:00PM. Funeral services will immediately follow at the conclusion of calling hours. Burial with full military honors will be held in Hope Cemetery. Memorial donations can be directed to Corning Community Food Pantry, 39 West William Street, Corning, NY 14830.
