John Fell Obituary

FELL, John R.
91, died at home May 24, 2009. He was born in London, England to Richard and Eleanor Macaree Fell. During World War II he served in the British Army as a camouflage artist in North Africa, Italy and Greece. After the war, he attained teaching degrees at Coventry College and London University. Later he continued post-graduate studies at Elmira College and Alfred University in New York State. He taught Art and Pottery for ten years in London schools prior to his marriage in 1957 to the former Marjorie Clendenin of Trout Run. With her, he immigrated to the United States and in 1958 began teaching in the Elmira public school system. In addition he pursed a successful career as an artist, exhibiting in many museums in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Florida, including a number of one man shows most recently at Lycoming College in 2002. After retiring from teaching in 1980, he served as curator of the Gmeiner Museum in Wellsboro. He also conducted adult classes there, as well as summer classes on his lawn in Trout Run. He loved art, music and nature, particularly this area of Pennsylvania. He had a happy outlook on life, liked everybody and will be sorely missed. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a nephew, Peter (Karen) Clendenin of Hallieford, VA; a niece, Lucinda (Reynold) Scott of Buffalo, NY; two nephews, Jasper Jacob and John Kelley of London, England; a niece, Harriet Macaree of Nice, France; and 10 great-nieces and nephews. A Memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions in his memory may be made to the James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., Williamsport, PA 17701 or the Lycoming County SPCA, 2805 Reach Road, Williamsport, PA 17701. Arrangements are being handled by the Maneval Funeral Home, Ltd., "A Life Celebration Home", 500 W. Fourth St., Williamsport. www.lifecelebration.com

Memories and Condolences
for John Fell

Not sure what to say?

June 25, 2009

To the Fell family,
I remember Mr. Fell from my days teaching in Elmira. His paintings were prized and often given as retirement gifts. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Our hearts grant immortality
to those we love
in memory.

Mr. Fell always had a kind word to say to everyone who passed by his door, whether they had a class with him or not. Being from the South it was nice to hear something other than that harsh northern accent in the halls.

"J.R" was the finest instructor and mentor I ever had. He was the one teacher who tolerated my radical behavior, and actually offered guidance, without being judgemental. I will miss him very much.

My condolences.
Mr. Fell advised me to study ceramic engineering at Alfred University and recommended me for the program. I am grateful for his career advice.
He was good friends with my mother Arlene "Buzzy" Mustico who worked at EFA with him. She and Mr. Fell passed away on the same day, 5/24/2009.

Ceramics was my absolute favorite class because Mr. Fell made it so much fun. It didn't matter how good you were he encouraged everyone. It was a free and easy atmosphere, a far cry from the rigid teaching methods we endured in the 60's! Mr. Fell is painting some outrageously beautiful scenery right now.

He was the best teacher I ever had. He made me want to be a teacher. I have all ways wanted to be as good a teacher as my art teacher.

I have thought of Mr. Fell whenever I see the ceramic pieces that I made in his class. I had absolutely no creativity, but I remember his kindness and his patience with my attempts. He is truly one of my happy memories of EFA. I will forever be grateful to him for his encouragement. May he rest in peace.

Although I was not the most artistic student in the class, Mr. Fell always encouraged everybody (including me) to do our very best. He was a great guy with a passion for art, excellence, and people.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort. Mr. Fell was one of those teacher who left lasting impressions on his students. He taught with such vigor and passion. I have fond memories of my freshman year art class.

My most sincere sympathy to Mr. Fells' family.
He had the most influence in my life in the arts. He was an excellent teacher, and was very patient with aspiring artists like myself. I still think of him now and then when I paint. He always encouraged us to express our own techniques in art, never discouraged us in being creative. He will always be a good memory to reflect on. I thank God I had a chance to be his student.
Sincerely,
Susan (Bennett)

He was a great man and a great teacher - I was exposed to art from him in the late 50's and early 60's and memories of him remain to this day. He will be missed!
